1964 Savoy Wagon Rear Window help

hey guys,

Just picked up a 1964 Savoy Wagon. The only option it has is an electric rear window. My issue is the motor has seized and the window is stuck down. Does anyone know how I can get the glass and/or mechanism out without breaking anything? Any advice helps out.

There should be a panel on the inside of the tailgate you remove to get access to the motor linkage. After disconnecting it you can raise the window and finish diassembly. A factory service manual would help greatly in preventing any damage due to frustration or a "day of discovery" approach. Most models of wagons employed the same method and apparatus to raise and lower the window. Disconnect the battery before tearing into it and you may discover, with a car that old, the motor "ground" is nonexistant.

Do just as noted. Lay tailgate down , gently , on a solid surface and remove the back panel. You should be able to disconnect the harness ( yes, disconnect the battery first ) , remove the screws / bolts of the window mechanism, as applicable. Key is to take your time and not force it. I believe we make have even sprayed a bit of WD40 in the tracks and let sit overnight.

If you decide to remove the rear side glass ( new seals are available ) consider having a reputable auto glass shop do it, then store in a very safe place. Mine were factory tint ... so handled very gently. Auto glass shop also put in the new seals and replaced the glass after painting. Well worth the expense. Good luck. Wagons are Kool !

If you're not certain that the motor is seized, and not just non functioning, try adding the ground straps first. Also there is a safety switch on the drivers side that may not be making contact. Try the simple stuff first. The motor is probably bad, but it's worth a try.
