Hi Everyone Question: I'm a G M person but recently I came across a 1973 plymouth satellite with r r badges 340motor shifter on floor my question is the satellite in the r r family? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes it is. The road runner was part if the Satellite family starting in 71. Before that was part of the Belvediere family. A true road runner will have the VIN start with RM.

Hi Jim and thanks for your help cane you tell me what the letters 1st 2 rp mean on the vin.

R is the Satellite series, P stands for "premium" which translates into a Satellite Sebring Plus.

It is not a road runner, but it is the same body style. Since you're a G. M. guy let me state it like this. Your Satellite would be like a Le Mans where as the road runner would be like a GTO,
I hope you can follow me with this comparison.

Well Jim u just burst my bubble I'm glad u were able to set me straight, I still like the body and the looks have a 63 s s, 76 442, I just might add the satellite. I want to thank you for all your help and take care stay safe and keep cruising!!!

Another note, the satellite was not available with a 340, that engine was only available in Roadrunner in 73, so that tells me it doesn't have original motor, and someone made a clone Roadrunner.

Post the VIN and more help will come,

Depending on year I'd say more a Tempest is a Belvedere, Lemans is a Roadrunner and GTO is a GTX. Being the Roadrunner as a middle performance model. Satellite and Sport Satellite being trims packages over the Belvedere.

just that the Belvedere was removed since 70 becoming the Satellite as the base model then things changed a bit, some other extra trims added in the middle ( sebring and sebring plus ) and GTX as an extra trim on RoadRunners since 72 and not anymore as an extra model

Can I be wrong?

I was just trying to make it as simple as possible. When you dive deeply into all the various models, it gets really complicated.

Satellite Sebring Plus would actually be more like the luxury lemans.

Being as you are a GM guy, here's some information you might find useful.

You have a Satellite Sebring Plus, which for all intents and purposes is a Roadrunner minus the special hood. You got the bucket seats, the console shifter, likely a Rallye dash, and you find a hood and paint the grill and have yourself a great Roadrunner clone.

All these cars started life the same, as a Plymouth B body, and only became Roadrunners or Satellites by virtue of an entry in an accounting ledger, not by an act of God.

I've been a 73/74 guy all my life, and the sad reality is not many people care about these cars. Those of us who love and appreciate them do, but the other 99.99% of the population quit caring about Roadrunners after 1972 and many quit caring after 1970, so what you do to your 1973 isn't going to make much of a difference to anyone but you, so feel free to make it a Roadrunner if you like.
