1970 Daytona Fact or Fraud

I thought it was a dealer installed item in 70...Not a Creative built option....As this link shows the dealer installed cost. I think several were found....But the rear window was not changed...

Man that was an expensive 70 charger over 6k back in the day

I am sure there are a handful of 70s that were converted into daytonas very early in their lifetime, including the possibility that this may have been arranged through a dealership or two, post-delivery.

I haven't seen any real evidence to make me believe that Chrysler ever built a 70 Daytona.

Perhaps the Chrysler mail clerk who has vague memories of seeing a factory 4-door '70 Cuda could have the same vague memories of a factory 70 Daytona also.

If I ever find a reasonable priced 69 or 70 Charger, it will get Daytona treatment. No window plug to keep it recognizable as a clone.

With all of the rumors of SuperBirds being modified back to standard Road Runner styling back in the 70s, how much can we trust that anyone would do this?

More rumors that don't seem to ring true. More to the truth would be that "some" birds got their nose cones got crunched early on and they put on a Satellite/Road Runner front clip as a cheaper repair and leaving the wing on.

There was an advertisement campaign for the
1970 Daytona Chargers, no side scoops

there was an advert. in Playboy too
IIRC for the prospects of selling, 1970 Daytona's, never happened
NASCAR was in the process to Banned the Hemi
& Winged cars had to run 5.0ltr/305ci max engines

I do remember reading something there was
"allegedly" 2 built 1 green & 1 red
I've seen arguments both ways saying it did & didn't ever happen...
Neither of them had side scoops & they both still had the
Charger 500 flush rear Aero style window treatments, no sail panels...

Both the Red and Green "1970" Daytonas look to have 69 side reflectors (painted surround) and do not have high back buckets. The red car also seems to have a 69 pattern rear seat back. It was essentially illegal to sell them as a production vehicle past a certain date in 70 without a front bumper - I can't see Chrysler taking the risk, especially when you could buy a Superbird.

Daytonas were 1969 models & Superbirds were 1970 models. Period. Case closed.

That article with the green car was from September 1969 issue of Playboy & you'll notice that it doesn't have the fender scoops. Not sure why not.

This is one of the best Aero car sites
lots of information & speculations
& even some great history & facts

http://www.wwnboa.org/

Search there possibly write to them
or ask them, IIRC they have every Aero car cataloged
I don't remember for sure, don't have the time right now either to look...

The 70 Daytona thing ranks up there with the 71 TA Challenger; both are myths based on some early Dodge marketing.
