Hey All:

Have a 318 72 Satellite custom.Needs exhaust system replaced, so why not headers?

Looking for recommendations. I've only done A bodies and race big block stuff on B Bodies. Are there headers out there that don't require dismantling the steering linkage?

Thanks for any help!

Steve

Although I do not have them yet for my 340, 95% of the threads I have read and people I have talked to swear by TTI. They are very expensive but their fitment is top notch from what I have seen.

Fitment wise, the super easy Hooker Super Comp headers. You may not be in love with the 1-3/4 tube at IIRC, 36 inches, BUT there is no fitment issue, nothing below the linkages up front.

This engine is a '00-5.9. The headers were in a 318 as well. You would never know the difference in low end power from the 1 size fits all they replaced. In which I'll NEVER purchase again.

The easiest would be a set of shorty style headers. Or a set of tri y type headers from Schumacher. engine-swaps.com

I've never had a problem out of headman And I've done a bunch of small block 71-74 b body s with headers .
Summits brand is ok too I've used them a bit too

If those are the 1 size fits all with the drivers side header having 3 tubes under the front end linkage for the small block cars like the poster has, then these are disqualified.

Thanks for the pics! Very helpful. The Super Comps look right up my alley. I'm going to check with Hooker to see if these will clear my stock style trans linkage.

As far as the 1.75 goes, I'm looking to spray this car so a little extra exhaust size can only be a good thing!

And you're saying I don't have to disassembled the steering to install these? I'd really like to avoid that if possible.

Hey, we're on! Woo-Hoo!

I did not have to dissemble the front end linkages and none of the pipes are under the steering linkages. My photos show the underside of my Magnum. It has a console shifter. The OE kickdown linkage is long gone. Lokar cables are now employed.

Probably very little. Its a 318. I'm putting a 200 shot to it....

Stock 318? LOL, then yea, your pump out about 375hp - 450 hp depending on the year 318 then.

A '72 - 318 was 250hp stock?

Give it a 3 inch exhaust for the juice!

Hey:

I believe it was rated at 150 at 4000 RPM. However, we made 130 rwhp with it on the dyno at 3700 RPM, through the two barrel and stock tetanus infested exhaust. 4 bbl headers and cam should get us close to that 250 rwhp if it didn't get hurt on the dyno.

Any helpful tips for getting on the back two spark plugs on the drivers side?

With the standard 1 size fits all header?
LMAO

Spark plug socket and open end wrench. I myself also use the
mP rubber coated multi use gaskets to give more clearance for tight fitting headers. I employ those old 70's "T" handle hold downs for ez removal of the valve cover.

Below are TTI no problem with clearance headers. I do not have a shot of the super Comps. There EZ as well.

I can believe that. Before I drove my 73 Charger for a few months, I rebuilt the 318 back to stock, except for a summit camshaft ( IIRC, it had 272 duration and .454 lift), .040 overbore, and 340 valve springs. Edelbrock performer intake and carb, with summit headers. Had a lot more power than another 73 318 I have (bone stock).

WOW! Thanks so much for sharing this information. The Super Comps fit my satellite SUPER easy. Granted I had the car on a lift, but snaking them up through from underneath took about 5 minutes. No swearing, no denting to fit, no pickle fork or air hammer. I was able to just hang them on the studs at the ends of the heads , then tighten them up from above. I was dreading it all day, then couldn't believe how easy it was.

Why they even still make that standard header I'll never know....

Now if you could open up the 318 exhaust ports to match the header flange maybe you can get a real power change for your money.

I'm dynoing it this week. We'll see how much it picks up.

Plugs are all pretty easy to do. You do have to disassemble the stock automatic column shift (no biggie). A couple of the header bolts are a pain because the tubes aren't dimpled, but that's a small price to pay for the mega easy install (at least if you've got a lift - you might have to get the car kind of high on the ground) . So much easier to like a car if you know removing a header isn't going to be a mega pain in the rear.
