Looking to replace my bench seat with original buckets. Are they comfortable? Lumbar support? Good for long trips? Assume they have new padding.

A friend of mine has a '70 Super Bee, he originally had stock high back bucket seats in it, looked good with new covers on them, but found they were not very comfortable for long trips. He found a pair of buckets that would have been in a FWD Omni/Charger (?) and had then recovered by a local upholstery shop...I am sure if you google for pictures, you will be able to find the type I am talking about...sorry...no pictures for ya! I have driven his Bee and been a passenger in it many times, very comfortable and supportive, I do believe they has an adjustment for lumbar...maybe just for drivers side, but if I was building a car, I would not hesitate to look at those compared to aftermarket! Hope that helps.....

The seats from my 70 Charger looked nice. They have new covers as of 2003. They were okay for short trips but long distances sucked. No recline feature, not much lateral support for cornering. They are in the attic now in case I ever decide to go back to stock. I put in seats from a 2004 Neon SRT 4. Lighter, more supportive and very comfortable.

Originals are not that comfortable, even with new foam. No real lumbar support. High back is only advantage over the bench, IMHO, comfort wise. Looks wise, the buckets win, hands down.

I had extra foam put in my driver seat (70 GTX) mainly because it is the most used seat in the car, and for added comfort. However, agreeing with the others above, these cars were not really designed with comfort in mind. Performance and kick-*** power were higher on the list of priorities at the factory.
If you want comfort, go buy something more modern. Stock seats were made for planting your *** while you mash the go pedal, not for having a siesta on a Sunday afternoon. :D

Agreed. My buckets came from an 89 FWD Daytona in a yard in the snow. Upside down. Car had under 4000 miles till the idiot wrecked it. Has a small cigarette burn in the driver side. Best seats ever. Easy conversion. Good for 500 mile days. They are showing their age now too.

I went back to a bench. At least it's comfortable. Neither have side bolsters or good lumbar support.

I had the buckets in my previous 70 RR and put the buddy seat in when I converted from auto to 4 speed and removed the console. I liked comfort of the buddy seat/arm rest. I have a bench seat in my current 70 Satty convertible. I'm not really interested in converting to buckets, but would def be interested in the split bench that has the fold down arm rest built in.

I replaced the stock low-back buckets on my 68 Coronet with leather high-backs from a 71 Charger. The lumbar support is non-existant, but I love the style and I wanted to remain somewhat period correct. I agree modern seats would be more comfortable, but really, how often do we take our classics cross-country?
You'll have to figure out what's more important - comfort or trying to stay somewhat stock.

What he said. Granted, some of these cars are used often but most are only driven occasionally. A well done stock interior looks awesome. And lets face it; looks matter.

Yeah, I hear you, Jack. Stock looks natural and great but they are light years behind the comfort of the seats in a newer car.

I prefer the original look too but I do hit the HR Powertour every few years and that bench seat about killed me in Kentucky in June!! Uncomfortable!

FWIW
When I recovered the bench seat in my '68 Coronet I stretched the springs here and there, plus added padding where needed for the comfort and support I wanted. It's much more comfortable for long drives then the factory bucket seats in my '70 Charger.

When I did my buckets, I put 1 inch foam on the bolsters, made a huge difference and also a 3/4 inch spacer under the front 2 bolts to lean the seat back.

I have 6 way driver seat in my red Charger. If you can find one, buy it. Between my red Charger & my other cars it is so much more comfortable being that it has tilt up & down & back & forth.

I used 04 Stratus seats and had the upholstery shop make new covers with a more period correct look. Most comfortable car I own to drive by far.

The word lumbar wasn't invented until the 80's.....

Drove my Gomango 70 Charger to Carlisle once , had the high buckets , 8 hour trip one way, developed a hemeroid on the way back! The best was my 70 500 burnt orange vert, it had the bench with low rounded bucket backs with headrests and folddown armrest. Sat in a Prowler once in the showroom when they came out, almost fell instantly asleep , they were so snug and comfortable, might be dangerous on the road!!!

My 70 Coronet has nice buckets and they're very uncomfortable.
I wish my car was a 4sp with bench seats.

I would keep the bench seat if comfort is an issue.
