Hi fellas,
As some might remember I am building a 65 Belvedere II and trying to keep the exterior fairly stock looking. Well I mocked up the fenders and hood yesterday and found I only 2 1/4" of clearance from the gasket flange on the TB to the hood reinforcement. I wanted to utilize a air box system but I can't with a flat hood.
My options seem to be: Bulge on hood, with air box.
Scoop with sealing pan.
More beer!
Am I overlooking any other real solutions? Thanks for suggestions.

you can get a 1/2in by putting spacers between the k-member and frame like the superstock cars.

I would say you have just a few options:
1 - Cut out a section of the hood re-enforcement
2 - Try an open/unbaffled air cleaner ( drop style ) of a lower height
3 - Take the center section of your existing cleaner deeper into the cleaner housing
4 - Use a "cap" style cleaner with the two tubes that end in K&N style air filaments.
5 - Install a cowl induction scoop. They look so much better than top mounted bug catchers.

Put a max wedge or super stock scoop on it. Either one will look BITCHIN!

Thanks for the responses fellas! I have decided to go with a bulge shape like the cowl induction hoods on some Bowties only it will not go so far rearward and the rear side will be screened for heat exhaust. This will give me the room to use a Ram Air Box setup. Thanks.

take a look at the old ford thunderbolts. they had a setup like you are talking about.

I have been working on fresh air induction for ole Brutus--1964 Dodge ...ala Ford Thunderbolt
These pics are pretty crude, just first mock-up. No, I won't be using "gorrilla" tape ! 8-) .....Since these pics, I have lowered the air cleaner and might have clearance for 4" tubing. ...............MO

Well, my cowl induction plan didn't work. I bought a Ram Air Box from AIS and it sat up so high it would have taken a 6-8" high rise to cover it.
I went to the only option left-a scoop. I will not choke down my engine and that includes feeding it underhood air. I designed and laid out a scoop using my original hood (reinforcements rotted at rear).
Here are some photos of the roughed out scoop:

More photos. I talked with my body man and we decided to glue the scoop on with corner welds!

Mike, Nice work on your hood scoop. I especially like the front edge. The 1964 Dodge is much easier with the inner bracing the way they are. I didn't have to cut any of it out, and with the air box I used and the "butt ugly" hood scoop, it finally worked out pretty well in the end. I am using the flat base ( offset cause the engine is not centered in the hood) on the air cleaner so that it's easier to get to carb adjustments I did have to go from a 2" phenolic carb spacer to a 1" to make room for the air intake hoses. BTW check out Spectre flexible duct plastic like hose that uses "threaded" on connectors . A little pricey , but well worth the trouble it saves. Easy to form and re-form and hold its shape. I will attempt to attach a pic...Good Luck !......................MO
