It's been a year so I thought I'd provide an update on the Petty tribute build. Completed the rear deck mini spoiler, relocated the fuel filler to the correct location, acquired a period correct Moody-Holman fuel cell and filler and installed it into the spare tire well, found a NOS period correct LeMans NASCAR single 4bbl carb so I switched away from the dual quads to the correct single 4bbl, located a number of parts from a former 426 hemi racing garage in the Ohio area including the Cotton Owens long tube headers and got the 10" rubber tucked into the flared rear quarter panels. This was a bit of great work by Matt at Classics of Santa Cruz. There is no metal cut nor added to the outside fenders and no tubbing. He cut the wheel wells and inserted triangles front and rear inside the wheel well, then filled the 2" gap from the fender "bulge" with a hoop within the wheel well itself. Total old school and the way they did it in '67. Final picture is the car on the rotisserieon it's way to body and paint.

Lookin' good

Let the body work begin! First side almost completed. Hoping to get the hood and trunk lid done this week. Looking at ~2 months at Leland's Auto Restoration for getting her back and putting her together for the final time. More pictures as progress moves along.

A quick update as we start the painting on the Richard Petty Belvedere tribute build. The first two pictures are the car after blocking and sealing and the second two of the dash and hood latch cross member in blue. Painting expected to be completed in 2 weeks. It turns out that an original vintage Petty raced car is in a local collection/museum and we spoke to their painter for guidance as he had done the touch up spray work. We shot a paddle of the proposed color and laid it onto the real car, spot on. Yes, we snuck it in and laid it on the car! We shot paddles of a number of other "Petty Blue's". It is similar to B3 Basin Street Blue, so I understand the confusion, but various sources also claim B5 True Blue Poly to be "the" color. I'm hoping the finesse of the rear flaring and other body modifications comes through better in blue than in primer/sealer.

Search other posts under my handle and you'll see some of the in-process pictures.

Barely legal and I'm completely expecting tickets but it'll also be used for charity work

I always wanted to do a street going replica of pettys 73 charger. My brother had a 73 around 1980-1981. Thats when i had this idea. Then about 7-8 years ago these street going replicas started popping up in hot rod and car craft. I guess good ideas do come around. Nice work, id love to take a ride in one of those vintage hemi stock cars one day

The challenge we've had due to the pre-internet years, is locating information and verifying it. There is so much conflicting information in old articles and documents of the time that it's damn near impossible to create an agreed accurate build. We visited Petty's car at the NASCAR museum and it conflicts with pictures of the car in action or hood open. The cars were heavily modified from Friday night's race to Saturday's or Sunday's race. If you crashed, you welded something up and painted it. We had to draw the line away from explicit accuracy as it was subjective to a slice of time (day of the week). Five years in, we're discovering new details, while at paint, that we cannot accommodate.
