I’m having a problem with my exhaust in terms of the rich smell of gas coming out the back. I’ve had it in the shop twice for other things and asked them to take a look at it. This is a pretty astute muscle car shop that runs the gamut. They tell me there’s nothing wrong with the carbs - they re jetted them and leaned them out a bit. I had advanced the timing to what it was straight off the dyno tune. It doesn’t blow any smoke but the smell of rich exhaust is a bit too much. No it’s way to much. The shop owner said sometimes it’s bad gas or just the quality of the gas we have out here in CA. Everyone pretty much knows it’s piss with a little additive to it to allow for internal combustion.

The guy mentioned something I’d never heard of called Stabil-not sure of the spelling. He said it helps counter the negative effects of the additives they put in the gas. Anyone ever heard of the stuff? What does it do? Where do you get it?

I appreciate any and all feedback - Thx!

I use Sta-bil every year at the end of the car season when I put my car away for the winter to keep my fuel fresh. I get it at Canadian Tire up here in Canada.
STA-BIL® Fuel Stabilizer

Keeps fuel fresh for up to 24 months during storage
  • Eliminates the need to drain fuel prior to storage
  • Ensures quick, easy starts after storage
  • Prevents gum and varnish build-up
  • Effective in all gasoline, including Ethanol blend

Yes, Stabil is used to winterize gasoline engines. It's sold at all auto parts stores in the snow belt. Just add to your fuel tank.

Thx Moes - where do you get the stuff?

Yes, I've used it for many years, in containers and in fuel tanks to maintain the fuel.

Have Sta-Bil on hand to treat fuel when storing. The new Challenger lays around a lot so I put it in the tank. It helps stabilize the fuel when not driven for long periods. Mine runs a little rich, but not enough to burn your eyes. Tend to think we have forgotten what aromas were normal back in the day. I have put some Amsoil 50-1 in to mitigate the ethanol, but not sure it makes any difference.

Cars with catalytic converters tend to produce a different smell of exhaust. The older cars without them do smell different.

Now that I know how to spell it I googled it and guess you can find it at a variety of stores. Never heard of it until today but think I’ll run my tank down - fill it up and add some of,this stuff to it. It just may be that I have a build up of gunk in the tank. The car sat for nearly thirty years and I’m sure must of had some gas in it when it was put to sleep. Maybe this will help, tone town the smell.

I agree with Dennis, better-half says what's wrong(?) every time I fire it up. She forgets what the smell used to be; me I just get high & smile!

Actually, you want StaBil 360. That version is for ethanol issues and keeps gas fresh for 360 days.

Sta-bil also has a additive that keeps the inside of your gas tank from rusting due to condensation and other factors. It is supposed to even work in the upper part of your gas tank--above the fuel. Rather pricey as I recall..
BTW a rich idle circuit will smell gassy at the exhaust. A Holley has idle mixture adjustment screws that could be your problem..............................MO

Mo - yep that’s what I have is a trio of holly 2 barrels. I’ll check as you suggest. That may very well be part of the problem. I thought I ruled that out - but will re- check. Thx bro!

i add a little stabil every fillup. and then the recommended amount into a full tank when the 'vert goes into hibernation

Same stuff I use. A couple of local marinas claim it works better than the red Sta-Bil.
There are folks on both sides of the fence here....and some say they both are equal....

Years ago I had issues with stabil turn the gas orange and ruined a carb. Since then never looked back but I am sure it is improved from that time period....

I have had zero issues with startron and it was referred to me from others that store things for long periods of time. The other key I keep the tank full during storage as well...
