Gents,
I've run into a combination of issues. first my car was a 318 car and had a 340 swapped in it at some point prior to my ownership. it currently has a set of headers( that has steering parts going through them I'm guessing meaning they are cheap) that are too hole filled and rusty to salvage. my current set of headers does not allow the correct 340 oil filter to fit (k&n hp3001) the filter sticks out almost 1" too far. when i bought the car it had a progaurd pr 073 filter that was smaller but a constant cause of leak. now i am content with purchasing new headers but i am having issues finding any that describe fixing my clearance issue and don't want to invest 500+ dollars and have the same filter issue. any advise is greatly appreciated.
thank you.

Don't freak out, you'll be fine. Here's a couple of things that might help.
1. 318's and 340's are the same size.
2. I seem to recall...from way back... that there are "shorty" oil filters for clearance problems. It sounds like your PR073 is one of those. Running them is just fine as long as they screw on AND the position of the rubber seal is the same (relative to the threaded hole) as a "stock" oil filter. I suggest you compare the "screw on side" of the filters for this AND check your oil filter mounting pad for burrs & nicks which could cause a leak.
3. The "main" issue I've heard of regarding header clearance is the power steering box itself, so double check the listings when you buy headers. I think the people on this site prefer TTI headers, but I believe they're pricey. In my opinion, you will be fine with just about any 1-5/8"-1-3/4" (primary tube size) header unless you have an all out race motor. Bigger tubes will slow down a milder motor & have more clearance problems than smaller tubes. "Slip tubes" help installation, but aren't usually necessary.

Hope this helps..I had a 1971 satellite that I swapped the 318 in for a 340. I had to use a direct connection offset oil filter adapter...moved the filter at an angle to clear the header tube. All the headers I looked at you had to drop the tie rod end on the driver side and stab it back through the header assembly. That side sits a little lower but its all I could find at the time.

I understand they are similar but are they really exact? Could I purchase cheaper headers that say they are for a 71 b body with a 318?

My dim recollection is that offset oil filter adapters were required for some header applications.

also on this car. the 340 is not a permanent engine. i have plans to drop in a turbo 3rd gen hemi so if i can avoid buying top dollar i will. will the flotech 318 headers for a 71 charger from auto zone will work with my 340?

Get the Super Comp headers from Hooker. They fit awesome, are super easy to install, plug access is great and you'll have room for your oil filter.

You wouldn't happen to have a part number would you?

long and short filters have the same attachment, they are just different in length.

I'm 90% certain you can get either in the "Mopar" brand.

Welp did a little more digging and found a few more cross references to try. Grabbed a napa gold 1085 filter in the ay home and it appears to be exactly what i need. Hopefully ill have time this weekend to get the header back on and see if ive solved my leak thank yoh for the assistance

Been a long time, but I thought the PH43 was the short version filter of the PH8A?

I haven't looked at headers for a small block in a long time. TTI used to be the only good fitting above the linkage headers. Not sure what is out now that might be good?

If having oil leaks around the filter, it could be the plate on the block not sealing to the engine block.

The cheap summit brand headers had the steering shaft running threw the one. As for the oil filter you had two different setups straight on or 90° I always kept the 90° deal as I found them you just unscrew it then the straight one will work some headers required one kind others required the other .

Just order summit headers for 318 71-74 b body get that fixed then go from there I'll look to see if I uavevan extra adapter!
