I recently purchased a 70 RR. It is an "N" code 383 car. It now has a 440-6 pack in it. The story goes(unconfirmed) that the person who bought this car new, asked the dealer to put the six pack engine in it before he took it home. Im just curious if the dealer would have taken the 440 out of another car, or got an engine from factory and swapped it? t There is a serial number on the engine on passenger side just above the oil pan. 1C160147. I was told the last 6 digits denotes what car that engine came out of. Where would i be able to find this out?

If it was bought new in 70 I seriously doubt the dealer could have installed a 71 engine !! Also, you would have to go to the internals to determine if it is/was a real six pack engine or have the complete vin that is was assigned to,it's easy install a six pack and say it is a six pack motor.

1C160147 is out of a 71 C body. The C indicates Jefferson plant which built C bodies.

Is there an HP on the front pad?

Stories are stories......

Do we know for sure it is from a car?

If yes, then throw me a bone. What's the CID and EAD? HP or not? R or P in the engine serial number? From that you can narrow down the plant which decreases the possibilities of what it could be from.

I.e. 340 narrows the plant then you look at VIN range.
I.e. 360 narrows it to C bodies.
I.e. 440 HP eliminates an Imperial and with that VIN may eliminate Hamtramck and Jefferson plant.

Based on that, and other info on the block, one might be able to tell what it came from or you can certainly narrow the possibilities.

your story is fiction
enjoy your runner

The engine date stamp on the drivers side of the engine reads 10-14-70. But the stamp on the passenger side states it as a71??

71 model year which ran from Aug 1970 to July 1971. So an October cast block would go in a 71 model year car.

Most all 70 and up 440 engines had 6 Pak rods. Easy to tell. Does it have a added weight on the harmonic ballancer? If so it has the heavier 6 pak rods. The only real internal difference as far as performance in ANY factory forged crank 440 is the cam, valve springs, intake/carb, and compression ratio. 69 6 Pak motors used standard 440 rods without the weighted balancer.

And the sixpack,70/71 was the only one with valve reliefs
