Do you think I need a new floor pan?

I removed the carpet/pad and seats to cut off some small welds inside my '69 rr and noticed some daylight coming through the floor pan behind the driver seat. I de-greased and cleaned up the rest of the floor pans inside with a wire brush and it appears ok. There was some light surface rust in a couple of spots but I removed that with the wire brush.

I spoke with someone who recommended that I replace the entire floor pan instead of having someone attempt to correct this, which I am not sure is possible. I'm not a welder or fabricator by trade, just a layman.

What do you guys think? I called a local restoration company and they recommended replacing the pan because to try and repair the rust would make it look all boogered up and not real clean. They said this would take them about 12-16 hours @ $60/hr. Not sure if it is needed or if that is a fair price.

That rust is right on the seam between front and rear pans so both are affected. If you are not worried about resto level fixes just get a rear pan section and then cut the rot back on the front pan and weld in a new strip. The joint gets seam seal.

Well, like threewood says, if you're not worried about resto levels then...who would see the repairs anyway once the carpet is back in place?
 
Are you going to paint the floor pan when finished?
 
I repaired this in my car. I just fabricated a patch. My car is built to drive though! And like stated above, the carpet covers it up just fine. Unless you are building a show car, patching things is far cheaper than replacing entire pieces.

Rust never sleeps. Rule #1= where there's rust, there's more. I agree with the shop, do it the right way. The quote to me is fair.
 
For $700-$1,000, does that include the new floor pans? That doesn't sound horrendous. What does the rest of the car look like and what is your end goal? Daily driver, goofing around car--patch it. If you're going to throw a new interior and good paint job on the exterior, let them put the pans in. Just my $0.02.

You could always buy a mig welder (shop around) and do it yourself, learning isn`t hard. After its all over u have a free welder, after saving the price of paying someone else to do it.
 
$60/hr seems fair as I know some places charge $125/hr.
 
Ah I wouldn't go that far if your not worried about perfect! I'd osfoo the heckler out of it and puddy it up ! And keep going, now if it's not a driver and you are in fact trying to make it perfect then I would stitch a patch in I wouldn't replace the whole thing org metal is way better then repop
 
I had several (spots) not to different than yours, started patching and kept finding more holes or blowing thru due to it (metal) being to thin.
I went ahead and bought the whole pan and rear footwells...I hope to start here in a couple of weeks.

Everything depends on the condition of the rest of the car and what your plans are for it. I’d lean toward to replacing it. THe $60 an hour quote is a fair one. That is as long as it doesn’t take them twice as long as someone else.
 
Well my rear footwells just showed up. The other thing I took into consideration is the safety factor. If your floor is bad in other areas especially at a seam or on a cross member what do you think your seat will do in a crash? A cage won't do you any good if your flying around inside of it...

Even with good floors, a seat in a race car should be attached to some other type of frame work instead of just sheet metal flooring with some factory style gussets.....
 
Thank you for the replies. Yes the car was a race car but I'm putting it back to street worthy. I'm not going for the perfect car look so a patch/repair would be fine, I just thought I might be able to address the rust since I noticed it. I imagine its been there for a while and I'm really trying to just get it back on the road.
I've priced front floor pans at $499 plus shipping. I don't know what the rears cost but I'd imagine maybe $200. Labor is apx $1000. So I'm looking at a $1700+ repair. Sucks because as much as this should be done I really don't have it now and the carpet and seats will need to go in soon enough... :(
