Hi well after tearing off the old vinyl top on the car I just purchased I have more than surface rust as can be seen by the pictures. So I am trying to figure out a decent way to repair the metal rather than have a new skin installed if possible. The question is is this so bad that it really is not repairable in anyway? I am sure when I take it down to bare metal I am not going to have a whole lotta metal left (thin spots as well as larger holes). I think I know where this thread is going so the next question is.

The skins are ~$600 how much would an install be if I did the final feathering and body blending? Does anyone have experience with this process? Its new to me and I had not intended on needing to do this.

Thanks!

Ouch!
Your gonna need to reskin that one. She's a goner...

Roof is gone. The key is, how far has the rot spread. You have to go to where you have good metal. How are the windshild pillars ? How are the sail areas of the quarter panels ?

buy a roof, do it yourself........ buy a small mig with the money you save.......it's a weekend job, 2 weekends for a beginner

I did this on my 69 GTX. Fortunately I had a donor roof that came with my car including the sail panels (upper quarter section). It is very straight forward to do. How do the roof rails look? A pillars? Those upper quarters look bad and I don't think they sell those patches seperate as they do the window corners.

It has to be replaced, no doubt. Cut out the old spot welds along the window channels and roof rails. There is lead in the quarter/roof seam that needs to be melted out to ge to the spotwelds beneath it. Send me a private message if you have any questions. I have pictures in my thread in the members restoration section...http://www.forbbodiesonly.com/moparforum/threads/1969-gtx-the-t-stands-for-tetanus.111018/page-4

I bought a coronet roof and put it on the belvedere. Took a little longer than a couple days Hell I spent 4 days drilling out spot welds.

If you plan on keeping the car you gotta replace. We did repair on a 72 Satillite after one year bubbles started to show. The new owner had it repaired, it came back again.....

Thanks guys this is kinda what I thought. BeepBeep great photos thanks! The A pillars are solid which surprised me. I know how to weld but for medical reasons I can no longer do this. So I will have to get a shop to do this for me. It will put me over budget as I had not anticipated having to do this work however. I am able to do the prep and post bodywork and paint so I just need someone to do the cutting and welding. I guess I will have to call the shops to see how much they want here in the Phoenix area.

There is a member here, Donnie, that has used panel bond with good success so keep that option open as the new roof skin will not be drilled for plug welds. Your just going to need a lot of harbor freight clamps lol.
That sail panel will have to be repaired with new metal and welded though. My 69 had 205 spotwelds, I counted :)
Are you able to do any metalwork with your condition, such as drilling and cutting?

Yeah skin needed on that one you will drive yourself crazy trying to fix that and in the end you will just have blow threw holes probably make a nice sun roof! Cut the roof off make a one off like others do !

Just kidding get a skin !

Hi rhreewood yes I can do netal work. So I theoretically can get the hard stuff like removal of the roof done. Scary concept though. I assume the free nt and rear glass needs to be removed as well another scary concept for one guy to try and tackle.
Bb70 I hear ya by the time all the rust was removed I would have swiss cheese and I bet more ripple than a Ruffles potato chip lol.

Yes, front and rear glass has to come out to expose the spotwelds. As well as the interior roof trim, headliner, etc. It is a big project but it must be done. Go step by step and don't overwhelm yourself. If the 70 is like the 69, the front windshield is held in with a gasket while the rear is held in by a bead of adhesive.

Scrape the old roof rail sealer out to expose the spotwelds. After the spotwelds are drilled out, lead removed from c pillars and a pillars, there are also beads of body seam seal across the center supports to keep the roof in place. A scraper and hammer can break these loose from inside.

Once the old skin is off, those sail panels need to be dealt with first. And inspect the roof rails for pitting and damage as they are being repopped by AMD if you need to replace them.

After the sail panels are fabbed and welded, the roof is pretty easy to do. If you use panel bond it is simple. Test fit, lift up skin, apply bond, set skin down, adjust, clamp. If you get a shop to weld it in, they have to drill out the edges to plug weld.

Just my opinion but it's a hell of a lot quicker and easier to replace the whole roof frame and all if you find a good donor. I was fortunate on my Charger to find a doner where the bottom of the car was shot but the top was very solid, took 1 afternoon to put it on. Taking measurements is obviously more important going this route though.

Well it looks like I know I nerd to do this new skin or replacement. I have had the car for 3 weeks and am trying to get it running which is the first priority. Thanks for your inputs guys !

Before you weld/glue, make sure the glass fits.
Yes, what I did was put marks on recorded intervals across the top and bottom of the openings then adjusted until they were dead on... glass went right in.

Just reading this topic. Were you able to complete the roof replacement? How is the metal on the rest of the car? What other metalwork is needed on the car?

Haven’t gotten to it yet. I am working on getting her running and just keep finding more stuff that either needs replacement or rebuilding. Once running I will start with the roof. Will post the progress! Check out my mail progress thread on the 70 BBody section 1970 Sport Satellite something or other....
