im going to be placing an order at mcmaster carr soon.thinking about getting various taps/dies, for wheel studs/lug nuts. (as boy2 cross threaded one on the durango, which is 1/2x20)
anyone know thread size on wheel stud for a 68 b body? no left hand, but, wth, i just may 'need' it eventually. 2000 ram 1500? 2014 journey?
how about, any other 'interesting' size, that may get futzed up on a weekend repair, and unavailable till monday - due to auto parts houses not carrying taps/dies?
(like the 9/16 -12 for the ram's 02 sensor, that was another fun one)
thanks

You would be better off to use thread chasers not taps and dies. Once a thread is cut, it's cut and there really is no such thing as re-cutting. If the threads are slightly stretched or distorted you need only "chase" them, re-cutting removes even more of the thread.

Read post #4.....

And depending how bad the boogered up threads are, you might can clean it up some with a three corner file or even a small half round (half flat? :D) file before trying to run a die nut over it. Make sure it's started on square too. I was the go to guy at work for messed up threads....damnit

m/c isnt descriptive enough, under the heading of 'thread repairing die'.
i would think these might be considered chasers

Never used a wrap around but always thought the single split die was so they could be adjusted for a different class of thread with the higher the class number, the tighter the clearance.

They call them thread repairing dies because that is what they are made to do. But if the end of the bolt or stud is a real mess getting them properly started is key. If they don't find the original thread path they will tend to make their own.
If an original thread has been "cross threaded" (especially with a heavy hand) it could be real tough getting a die back on the right track. And what is left is still a mess.
There is good value in the repairing dies for cleaning dirty and or rusty bolts. I use mine all the time for that. Not to mention--they can be used with a deep socket if space is an issue.

Single split dies have a set screw in them so you can set the percentage of thread cut to match the hole thread. When threading a hole, the drill by number gives you the percentage of thread that will be cut by the tap. 80, 90, 100% thread = loose, tighter, tightest with no clearance in the threads.

Thread files work well on studs and bolts
I have both std and metric and saved a few peoples ***

You do not have to go expensive to clean threads. Buy the best you can afford. If you plan on putting on new threads spend some money and get good ones.
