Hi,
I've got a Coronet 1966. Something is wrong with my steering gear box assembly. The ingoing shaft is not aligning with the steering shaft. The gear box housing is also touching the inner fender wall. Is this really the right steering gear box for my car?

Do you know if the K frame has ever been changed? I always thought that the B and E K-frames were the same for that but I'm told they are not.

I dont know if the k-member has been modified. It looks original, but maybe not original for my car?

Well, not supposed to be a castle nut on the lower control arm shaft.......so someone has been doing some shade tree engineering with it.

Looks like the same box I have for sale on here. http://www.forbbodiesonly.com/moparforum/threads/power-steering-gear-box.140122/#post-910799784. Sorry the pics are kinda crappy but you can still see its essentially the same. Came off my 67 coronet but I believe mine was not the original box as it has the large sector pitman shaft. That being said my understanding is there are basically 2 boxes, power and manual across the board at least for A/B/E bodies with either small or large sector pitman arms. Yes there are more boxes overall with different ratios and part #,s but the design for all bodies is the same with the same mounting points. This is why companies like firmfeel and borgeson can sell the same box for all body styles. The krame may be the issue as Cranky stated. This is form and E body site. Sounds like maybe you have a later model or E-body k frame.

E-body and '71-'72 B-body K-members interchange.

'70 B-body is different.

The steering box mounts at more of an angle on '66-'70 B-bodies.

The disc (tag) welded to the front has the last 2 digits of the part number I dont have a list but here are a few

# 52 is late 70 E-Body 318/340/383 & T/A
#74 is late 70&71 383/440 w/skid plate E-body
#74 is also 71 B&E Body V-8 (except hemi )W/Skid
#74 is also 73 E-body 318/340 W/skid plare

Thanks for your input.

You are writing "try this link", is there a link missing in your mail?

Yeah sorry. I pulled that from another site and copied more than I intended. I think the link was to more information on Kframe Tags but I didn't follow it so not completely sure.

casting number on Your box looks like a 70's era. Your pittman arm looks like wrong shape.

So, I guess probably I have the wrong k-frame in my car.

How can I identify my K-frame? And how can I identify the right K-frame for my car (1966 BB).

Dont jump on conclusion the K frame is wrong. We cant see a photo of the complete K frame to even speculate. If it has the single stud Idler arm bracket ( right side) you likely are with correct one. Even a 68-70 B body one will work fine. If some collision damage miss-aligned the steering box mount, you have a problem.

I found an old thread in another forum with discussions about different angles of steeringbox bracket on different years. However I did not find any final information how to see or measure the difference.

It would be nice to be sure I have the right type of k-frame before starting to search for collision damages.

If he has an original K frame he wont have a 'coin' tag, so no point in searching in vain. A quick photo to ID the kframe, as I said earlier will clear it up right off. Forsta

This is how it looks...

Here's another picture where the aligning problem through the fire wall can be seen....

I have a 67 coronet with out an engine. If you want, we can compare measurement if you'd like.

Of the three mounting points, the one most out board, is it in the same plane or at least in a parallel plane to the other two?

I don't know if it helps or not but here are some pics of the steering box/k-frame on my 66 Satellite which I'm putting back together. It's a 318 Poly car.

I still can´t find anything wrong with the k-frame.

The three mounting points seems to be parallel and the offset on the steering gear box has the same measuremenet.

The mounting holes at the steering gear box is in line with the steering gear box shaft (the second picture).
