Car: 1973 Satellite Sebring Plus. Figure 3500-3600 lbs
Motor: 1972 340
Compression: assume 9.5 to 1
Cam: Mopar Purple shaft, .471 lift
Trans: 904
Rear-end: 3:55 Sure Grip (8.25")
Tires: 215/60-15

Swapping out the original 318. The car will be street driven only. I have available to me (cheaply) a Turbo Action 17805ST. Would love to get it moving quickly from rest, but its a heavy car. Is this converter a good match for my combo?

It would be easier and cheaper for me to keep the Turbo Action unit. Feel free to give me your recommendations. Thanks.

I don't know the converter by part number, but you could put a low gear set in the 904.
Don't be suprised if the car actually weighs 3,800+

My gut instinct is to go with a lower rpm "flash" than you would guess....maybe "2600-2800 rpm" or so. When I looked into this for my non-Mopar I found out that the rpm listed on the stall converter advertising is basically just a guess & it depends on a lot of factors that the manufacturer can't control. What is really important is the "K-value"....higher K = higher stall speed for any given combination. Maybe see if you can research the stock converter's "K-value" and go up slightly from there? (what I did) my 2-cents.

The worst mistake I've personally seen on an engine build is a 3500 converter on a 73 Challenger with a 340 with a 280/480 cam and 3.91 gears. That car was not driveable on the street, and a big disappointment to the owner.

He's got it back on the road with a 270 cam and a 2500 converter and it's better already.

...and for what it's worth, my stripper 73 Satellite was 3700# on the scale, so an SSP is probably a couple hundred more unless you've taken a LOT of stuff off.

By contrast, my 70 383 in a Super Bee with a 284/484 cam, a stock converter and 3.55 gears was much, much, much more street friendly and would hang with that Challenger any time.

An 11 inch under 2500 would work out fine for a mild combo. Back in the day when B&M only had the holeshot and super holeshot I put a Holeshot in with a comp 268 duration cam and it was very streetable. I think they were advertised at 500 to 800 rpm over stock if I remember.

Call John Cope at Cope Racing Transmissions. He will ask for your specs and get you one for your application.

Your torque/stall converter should be matched to your cam specifications. What Moparcrazy and YY1 said. I am looking to upgrade my 340, and actually a 2400 rpm converter is what I need based on my crane 272 cam with 454/480 lift

Static compression is probably lower than you think, closer to 8.25. I would advise a better camshaft but if that's what you want make sure you are also degreeing it in.
