here goes, looking to upgrade cooling fan. 65 belverde originally 273 car. now 440 rb motor. auto trans manual steering factory radiator with steel shroud and 4 blade fixed fan. looking to upgrade to viscous fan to move more air and maybe free up a few ponies. I have 3and 1/8 inch clearance from where the fan mounts to pulley and the radiator.from what I see the new 6 blade fan and clutch setup that supersedes to 5 blade setup is too tall at 3and 5/16ths. has anyone used the haden2947 with this combo? from what ive read the hayden is 2.7 inches tall that would give about a half inch clearance? has any one sucsessfully used this combo? I don't want to move mounting tabs on radiator. I could use a more blade fixed fan as a alternative. car does not run real hot, but I think it could be better!

........hayden is 2.7 inches tall that would give about a half inch clearance?

FWIW, Your measurement puts you under 1/2", more like .425". Getting pretty close. MP recommends 3/4" min.

Agree. I just went through all this (and thru it and thru it...) on mine, thanks to a Griffin big arse radiator.
Bottom line on that one was:
1. That Hayden will buy you some space, but you'll curse it the whole time you're installing it as all the skin gets chewed offin yer knuckles.
2. "Clutch fan" (like the factory 7-blade) take up more space than a good straight drive fan that moves the same amount of air as it does.
3. Whatever radiator you wind up using (and with a 440, it'll be a big 'un, guaranteed), make sure to get one that will accept a shroud.

You just have to experiment until you hit on something that works. Measure, order, test fit.

short viscous units are being reproduced and should give the proper clearance.

Don't forget your engine / trans assembly can shift a bit fore and aft if you're using standard mounts.

On install, taping a piece of cardboard over the radiator fins can save accidental dings to them and the tubes. It can also save some knuckle skin. Just remember to remove it!

The thing about fan location has to do with useing a fan shroud or not useing one.

If not useing a shroud, a distance of no less than 3/4".

If useing a shroud, you should have 1/4 to 1/3 of the fan showing out of the shroud and the rest inside of the shroud. If doing this you don't have enough clearance (3/4") to the radiator then you have to change something until you do.

I found useing a shroud on my '62 that I had plenty of fan to radiator distance.

thank for the feedback guys! the short hayden unit still seems too tall. was looking thru service manual, seems that the 426w engine came with a 7blade 18and 1/2 fan with a torque style clutch. no spacer. this unit must be flat as a pancake given the clearance that is available. I don't have access to a parts# catalog, perhaps one of the members that do could chime in! in the mean time will go with a 6blade rigid fane from jegs and see how rhat works out!

jz, there are lots of threads on here for different combos that worked and didn't work. Went through this myself this year and ended up having to have a fabrication shop make a shroud that got everything in the right location. Seems to be working great but it took some doing. Every car is a bit different. Also went with the ridged fan with no spacer. (I'm not drag racing and I'm not worried about a couple of horses)

Click on the "search" button and see what's out there.

I am currently running the factory steel shroud with 4 blade fan and a 3/4 inch spacer. it works well just thought it could be upgraded a bit. will see how the 6blade fixed fan works out will try and post pics after install

My convertible was challenging because in addition to the 440 and 22' radiator my car has air. I'm currently using the Hayden 2947 and a seven blade fan. Other than the fan is a little noisy the combination works fine. I did install a torque strap just to reduce the risk of the fan being very close to the radiator.
