Hey all so I'm working on a 66 charger with a 383 magnum motor. Ok so for my ignition setup I'm debating whether to go with the mopar electronic ignition setup or a HEI distributor setup. I've always ran the mopar electronic ignition, but Ive seen a couple of guys using the MSD HEI setup which looks alot simpler than the mopar e.i. setup. Any thoughts or experiences dealing with the HEI setup would be appreciated.

i went with an FBO system and I like it a lot, they know what they are doing. You send them the info on your engine (cam specs, ect) and they will curve and phase the distributor. I went with the full conversion kit HRR688DWR. It went together easy.

Mopar electronic ignition was not the best. I tried it first, now I have the “all in one” or two wire whatever you call it HEI style distributor on my 340. Definitely simpler and runs much better. And I got mine for about a hundred bucks off eBay. I won’t swear on numbers but if you want quick easy and good looking it’s the way to go. You will definitely need a stronger coil though

Cap is about the same size the only noticeable size difference Is the controller on the side. But the amount of stuff you eliminate by going to this makes it worth it

I will be installing this one ... http://www.designed2drive.com/

You attach the HEI module underneath a stock electronic ignition dizzy ... I have installed similar setups on other vehicles and they work great but I always kept a spare module in the car just in case.

Thanks all for the input and help. I was looking at this MSD HEI that I included in a picture attached to this message. Anyome ever use this before?

why?

Damn I hate to see Chebby and Phord kind stuff on a Mopar engine bay... having Mopar kind options... or even aftermarket NON ANY BRAND RELATED kind options, such as MSD itself ( but not the HEI, maybe the RTR ).

for a simplier solution but keeping the look and pieces, Pertronix Ignitor. Just jump out the ballast on back ( inside the groove ) and done. I think is even cheaper.

that will keep your actual dist and no module needed, so will keep the stock 66 engine bay look. With several coil options from stock to performance ( oil, epoxy... Chromed, black, red )

I had a lot of GM cars ( and all of my friends did) back in the day... The HEI distributor was pretty bullet proof and a great idea.. Worked great on all the hot street cars we ran.
I put a Pertronix Plug and Play on the 67 Coronet I currently own... Billet, bearing instead of a bushing and NO boxes to deal with.. NO problems with it in 12 years...

In my current 440 car? Not sure, its about 12 years old. Plug and Play, black cap, billet housing, ...... I did have to grind down the stock 915 head a bit to get the distributor in.....
