My 1967 Belvedere Convertible Plans and Restoration (aka - Mad Scientist Build)

I agree about the winter, the farmers up here are bracing for it. You know how they knew it was going to be a bad one? They had so much rain that they were able to get 3rd and 4th cuts of hay in. If mother nature supplies you with that much harvest she's telling you, your going to by God need it.

Lathe rebuild progress . . . posted full details in the shop and tools thread . . .

Worked through a bunch of things that needed to be resolved to get this back together . . . making progress . . .

Cool build on the car just about finished with my 1966. If you have any question or need anything let me know and I will try to help.

Helping a friend . . .

Friend is building a BMW track car and cut out the spare tire well in the trunk for the fuel cell - and needed the hole filled ( sounds familiar )

So he brought the car over - and we made a blank . . . ( I didn't tell him that this Mopar Emblem was going in his BMW trunk - LOL )

He snapped this picture as I was getting started on the welding . . .

sm_weldstart.jpg

And the finished product . . . I told him he should have primed it last night . . . this is how it looked today - flash rust galore ! !

sm_weldfinished2.jpg

didn't turn out too bad . . .

Okay , the scrap metal that I had was a couple inches too short and I had to splice a small piece into the bottom of the repair . . . oh well, the fuel cell will be sitting on top of it and you won't see it . . .

Looks good, what did you use to cut out the well? What size wire and how much heat when welding new one in? I’m getting ready to tackle the same little project.

Been a crazy time . . . lots of stuff going on for me and have not caught up with the updates . . . so I'll try now . . .

Been having some issues with the 66 Shoebox . . . so I had bought a 4 barrel intake at the car show and still have not installed it . . . so I figured, why not ? ?
Just got started with the tear down . . . and found the choke connection came loose - humm - hooked it back up and the car was running great again ! ! !

To bad . . . I have this 4 barrel intake just waiting . . . so . . . The original 2 barrel carb . . .

sm_intake01.jpg

Pulled the intake - it's a MESS underneath . . . lot of cleaning . . .

sm_intake02.jpg

Then got the "new" 4 barrel intake installed . . .

sm_intake03.jpg

And the carb that came with the intake . . . uh . . . it's pretty dirty . . .

sm_intake04.jpg

Make that really dirty - so it's time for a rebuild . . . this needs it really bad . . .

sm_intake05.jpg

Pulled the cover . . .

sm_intake06.jpg

These parts are supposed to be aluminum in color . . . aren't they ? ?
Borrowed a friends ultra sonic cleaner . . . that's the tray that the parts are sitting on before the cleaning . . .

sm_intake07.jpg

And the carb after the cleaning and put back together . . . and the parts are aluminum in color . . . NOW . . .

sm_intake08.jpg

Then there is the bathroom that I'm remodeling . . . and the new ceramic tile floor ( no it's not wood )

sm_newtilefloor01.jpg

And the backing plate that I'm working on for my lathe to hold the Bison chuck that I just got . . .
Here is the plate being hogged out for the center hole . . .

sm_lathebackingplate01.jpg

After the center hole was hogged out . . . then it was bored out to the proper dimension . . .

sm_lathebackingplate02.jpg

This will be the connection ( with the proper dimensions ) for connecting the backing plate to the chuck . . .

Miss running my machines.....may sell em pretty soon. :(

You really need to learn how to prioritize things!!! I'll try to help

#1 Mopars
#2 Other American makes
#3 Shop tools
#4 Home improvement projects

You prioritize based on the fun factor Now get to work on the VERT Dammit!!

Fire in the hole ! ! !

The 66 lives with the New 4 barrel carberator in place ( guess work on the timing too - as my timing light won't work now )

Finally got all my parts for the fuel hook up . . . and the phenolic insulator for the carb
( which means I had to re-do all my connections - since the carb now sits higher . . . grrr )

sm_intake09.jpg

Kinda good news . . .
. - Got the timing gun fixed, a bad connection on the inductive pickup resolved the light not working . . .
. - Found and fixed a coolant leak on the 66 - one more thing off the list
. - Still need to get the timing set and the carb dialed in ( but we now have 6 inches of snow here - I sure as heck didn't order that crap )
. - Hopefully this weekend will warm up and allow me to get the 66 running again . . . can't wait . . .

The weather report for the area was <1" of snow . . . and this is what we've got . . . this is NC ! ! ! Hello ! ! !

sm_thisisNC.jpg

We ended up with over 5" of this white stuff . . . oh boy are we having "fun" down here . . .

Looks like a winter wonderland down here . . . this is why I left Michigan . . .

I know it's a hassle for the South but that's not even worth a mention in VT. I lived in SC/GA for many years and remember the traffic nightmares the snow and ice caused...

Dang Larry, you sure do have a lot of irons in the fire. Won't be any idle time sitting around for you when get around to retiring.

That's the plan Joel . . . I'm working on designing and building a shop right now so I'll have a place to work on all these projects ! ! !

Looking great! Keep up the good work! We got 6" two weeks ago on our side of the state, but luckily this one fizzled out. We got about 1/4" of sleet and 1/2" snow, but should warm up and be out of here by tomorrow. Stay warm and safe on your side of the state!

Man! What is up with the East Coast weather this winter? It's like the Ice Age. Hate to tell you what our "winter" is like so far in NorCal.
