Cheapish 727 rebuild and headers for a 1964 polara

Push button is very similar to the later trans. The input shaft, sealing rings, and reaction support are different. Obviously the output shaft , tail shaft housing , and valve body are physically different. You may want to upgrade to the 67 and up input shaft and reaction support, (along with a front drum if you go 71 and up). This will allow 67 and up torque converter. Trans parts online has what you need.

Changing the input shaft is a good option. The 1966 and earlier 727s used a 19 spline input shaft, where the 1967 and later used a 24 spline input shaft. Most torque converters are built for the later 24 spline input shaft. If you keep the stock 19 spline input shaft, make sure the torque converter is designed for that spline count.
You should budget the cost of a Trans-Go TF-2 shift kit too, $65.97 from Summit Racing.
If you are paying someone to rebuild the trans, they should help you select the parts.
I have bought some good rebuild kits off E-bay. I know what parts I want, and it was priced better than trying to piece all the parts together myself. The high end kits will have Alto Red Eagle clutches with Kolene steel plates, new bands (at least the front band), new bushings (at least pump and output shaft), and the seals/gasket kit. These "kits" are around $150+

I did not see the kit from the seller I normally buy from, but these are similar. Looks like they don't have the correct filter for the rear pump?
The Alto Red Eagle clutches and kolene steels are what drives the cost up, as they are top end parts.
There are kits with the less expensive Hi Energy clutches and standard steels that would work for you too, and save you about $50. Something like this:

Those Hi Energy clutches are still better than the standard rebuilder tan clutches. On the other hand, I have done the Trans star rebuild kits and they lasted pretty good, but cost about the same.

Even the rebuild er tans work when properly built
