Ok, Need some advice. A factory 4 barrel intake for a poly has dropped into my lap. It came with the original 4bbl WCFB that isn't in too bad of shape. My choices are, Rebuild the WCFB, go to an edelbrock 1405 with electric choke(the car has one on the 2 bbl) or use the new 650 Holley I have on the shelf in the garage with the Mopar linkage adapter on it. I know it's a bit more CFM than the poly needs but it's there in stock on the shelf. Ideas?

Try all 3 of them, see which one you like the most. I just re built 2 500 CFM Carter's, and put them on my tunnel ram. Im going to try them out, then switch to a pair of Holleys, see what works best. I like to experiment. I think the Carter 1405 will be the best one for you.

Check first if the manifold holes are large enough for the throttle blades. I have heard that some aftermarket throttle blades are larger than the manifold holes.I ran a 600 Edelbrock with a Weiand intake on a stock Poly 318.With dual exhaust it ran great.

I like the carter small primaries give good throttle response. Besides it's retro which is cool

Reliability and drive ability are the most important. I drive this car everywhere. I'm also thinking of putting a small cam in it for sound. Staying with the stock converter and Possibly swapping from 2.94 to 3.23 gears in it. I am installing my 2.5 inch tti pipes as well.

What the heck, I’d go WCFB first just shits&grins. You may never go any farther.

intake throttle bores may be an issue with a non stock carb.

let me no what it does witch ever way you go.Im rebuilding my 318 poly now and have a wieand 7503 intake I'm going to use.Im thinking of going with the Eldelbrock 1406 600cfm.

Wayback when a friend & I pulled an intake&carb off a late 50’s poly, I rebuilt the carb & installed on my dad’s ‘63 Fury. Took it off 2 days later, cudn’t afford the gas, but we had fun over the weekend! Only WCFB I ever handled I think.

OEM Carter works fine
no reason to spend hundreds on a new one
That Edelbrock is the AVS not the AFB- right
AVS self adjusts so size is not the problem
Holly vac secondaries and you own it give it a shot
I'd thing stick shift truck
smaller primaries would work best with Auto trans and street gears- even smaller primaries than a two bbl
and do check the openings on that manifold vs any carb B 4 spending money
we used to (have to) bore them out

Most Poly's were mechanical flat tappet cams later ones did have hyd but IMHO still had adj rockers
The hyd lifters are taller
no secret I like the Magnum/ AMC type
new pushrods will be required (the stock ones are mild steel) so get ones that oil the rocker balls
Lots of good .904 lifter hyd grinds out there
PM me if you want to go that route
remember the heads flow around 200 so do not go nuts on the cam
IF your rocker shafts and rockers are worn contact Rocker Arm re builders in Anderson CA
Remember the A engine in Engine Masters?
LA 4" stroker cranks and rods fit...bore to 4"
what's not to like except the weight
Aluminum heads?

I have a 1406 on my poly four barrel intake. Works great. What I did (may not be necessary) was open up the primary plenum bores since the 1405/06 carbs are square bore. And matched it to a phenolic square bore carb spacer made for the 1405/06 carb. 600cfm seems plenty for my motor, decent cam, headers, 9.5:1 cr.

I like to keep the left and right bores separated, no open spacers unless you can prove they help
they usually hurt low end and driveability (IMHO)

Threewood, is the carb base bolt pattern the same? I'd probably use a bit of a spacer to get the blades to clear. I was thinking the camcraft 24-181810A-4. It's 218/218/ @ .050 with 465 lift and 110 degrees separation.

From my experience, I would rebuild the factory Carter that came with the intake. It is probably the same one I have on my 318 Poly. The newer kits for them have a better pump seal in place of the leather one that was used back in the day. If you are not racing or looking for more performance, you can't beat the factory setup IMO. My car delivers 17mpg average with 3:15 gears. No carb problems as long as I don't use any ethanol gas.

looks like a chevy master
why handicap your mopar
IDK that camcraft has any .904 profiles- take a look

She's all Ethanol around here. wyrm, do you have a recommendation for any particular cam? I just want a bit of sound for attitude. I want the car to remain pretty mild. Keeping the factory manifolds, and stock stall. I can adjust gearing some but I drive the car a lot.

Yes, the Eddy will bolt right up. If you keep the manifold bores as is, you will need a reducer spacer where the larger ports from the cab are blended down to match the small primary bores in the manifold. So get a phenolic spacer made for the manifold and fit the carb to it with a dremel.
