gas mileage??

Its just like traveling out of Texas and hitting the Oklahoma border. Time stops

I ran the Mobilgas economy run for Mike Ricker Motors (Nash) Whittier Ca
Flathead 195.6 cu in 6 in a Rambler
t-96 OD trans with light oil
Rear end was taller than 3.08- with OD you got low 2.s not that lots of GM 3 speed AT cars
6.70 15 tires (taxi option- everything had to be stock)
1bbl carb
So a low power tall gear can work
You can try taller tires with less rolling resistance
spoiler helps ( we lowered the rambler to the max they would let us get away with and lowed the front bumper and raised the back on)
but a little rake on your rig

you could try a lock up trans/ converter
If your trans is good most could be used in a 999 rebuild get a core from a 360 with the double wrapped reverse band and more clutches
there are early and later lock up schemes- the first was mechanical (sorta like the effect of a FORD AOD), the second considers load, temp, etc etc
or
OD
get one from a 92-94 Dakota or Pickup
These have the easiest control of lock up and OD
they have a 3 wire connector
I have a V8 518 OD in my 92 Dakota- post back for details if interested- Transgo reprogramming kit
I have the Diesel straight cut gears vs the 30 degree stockers
95 they changed mainshaft sizes and gears changed to a 15 degree but straight cut gears do not fit the later shaft

On the up side, you could always get out and stretch your legs without having to pull over. :)

sorry guys.been busy for a while.my 318 has a mopar performance electronic ignition conversion kit.i havent really messed with it.i set inital timing at 6 btdc.i think it has an adjustable vacuum advance should i mess with that

Yes. For fuel economy, you want maximum vacuum advance, prior to spark knock, at a part throttle tip in.
Having the mechanical advance all in earlier will kill mileage because your vacuum advance has to be dialed way back.

what I did to my 318 distributor. Distributor Tuning

Jim

thanks.that is very helpful.i have been trying to tune the distributor on my chevy.it can get frustrating.when i am adjusting the distributor, sometimes it pings, sometimes it doesnt.im learning.i will practice on that before i touch the 'good' car.haha.on a 318 what is an approximate total vacuum advance for cruising?

32-34 full mechanical all in by 2800RPM, vacuum +18 for a 50-52 degree full advance.

32* by 2600 rpm, attach the vacuum advance and test for a max of 52*’s.
If you have the adjustable vacuum advance can, it is a 3/32 Allen.
Turn clockwise to decrease timing.

Depends the the canister if that screw adjusts travel or tension. I made 0.015" shims and shimmed mine.

Mine is a stock 318 with an RV cam and a FiTech. As much as you can run without it kicking back on the starter after a short heat soak. I have the FBO plate that locks it down to about 20 degrees total mechanical advance so I can get about 12-14.

My stock 318 poly with 2 bbl, 2.76 gears did 17-18 on a few trips across the country.
After the rebuild, with a 600cfm Eddy AFB, 3.23 gears it will get 15 to 17. Cruising 65 nets 2200rpms
My 440 with 800cfm AVS, 3.55s gets 9-10 if I am easy...which I am usually not. 65 cruise is 3k rpm.

thanks guys,i cant tackle it now but i will definitely try it as soon as i get a chance.i work on newer fuel injected cars and there are no adjustments.just put it together and start it up.i need more practice on my old cars.much more fun anyway.old cars have a personality.newer cars are boring!

Good question. I always did it by ear. Got a part throttle ping? Back off 2 degrees!
I remember initial being about 5 before TDC.
