Its after 2 Im eating a little something after i popped some Advil. Im a little well make that a lot bummed out. I have herniated disc in my neck that acts up but between Chiropractor and Advill/heating pad i keep it in check. Now its a different story, usually if i over do it i feel it, aches and pains as we all have and bad leg cramps but nothing i cant handle
Now I'm turning a conner. I cant sleep I'm so uncomfortable, the pain is on my other side neck shoulder area going down my back, the pain is also in my back on one side going toward my leg. Its better when i sit up. Im going later this mourning to see the Doctor.
Im being pressured to pack it in and I'm not mentally ready. When i work out at the gym i rarely have these issues and i think that is key
I was thinking one of you might be into the dark arts and put a curse on me for the other day (PlagueO Badgers) maybe, LOL. Either way how did some of you guys in my age (66) cope with all this? I was only kidding about the curse POB.

I hope the Dr can sort you out Steve....I know what it's like to have real bad back pains at times. Been living with that for nearly 30 years now....sucks being tall sometimes.
I banged my head on a job a few years ago (going down a narrow and low stairway), and within about 15 minutes my whole neck and back froze up. I drove myself to the Urgent medical centre somehow, and was seen pretty fast. It was so bad they gave me a shot of Pethidine in my *** cheek. Took about 2 weeks to recover from that one.

Oh, and 30 years ago, I popped a disc lifting the battery out of my RR.

I have 2 degenerated discs and find relief in 'facet injections'. I've had two. The first one lasted about 15 months. I also utilize an inversion table every morning as soon as I'm up. This has given me my life back. And yes, I am tall too. Working on ladders maintaining helicopters has taken its toll. Hoping you will find some relief soon.

As long as you don't have bleeding issues or ulcers ibuprofen (Advil) is a NSAID and your best bet for OTC. Heat and cold in rotation-but ask your doctor about that.
Opioids like oxycodone work great and if they are not combined in pill form with acetaminophen or ibuprofen can be used in conjunction with ibuprofen dosed separately, but we have all heard about their high potential for abuse and addiction, as well as side effects.
Lots of hard physical work and play have taken their toll on me, especially in the last 5-6 years and carrying extra weight in my case doesn't help.
I hope you find relief.

Feel for you! Been through that some 15 yrs ago. I tried everything but surgery, but in the end I had to have it fixed. If you get to that point find a good doc. It took me a long time to find the right guy. After that surgery I have been 100% better for the last ten years. Hope you get well soon!

I had my right arm go numb every time I laid down, went to the bone cracker-he made it worse. Finally went to a surgeon, he fused 3 discs in my neck with a plate, 6 screws, and cadaver bone. Its been great since 2005. Good luck!

LOL....Never thought it was you RC! The Advill kicked in and i slept ok. Going to see Chiro guy this mourning. I need to mend up and hit the gym and stretch. Nothing heavy and i have to start working smarter. Now i just have to listen to the bride and everyone else telling me how old i am and all this other BS. Thanks

800 ibs for me every other day yep its a pain getting older but i work with a bunch 30 years olds they all say how sore they are etc. I just laugh tell if you think your bad now wait till you get my age. Just remember you are still kicking butt it may hurt but you are in control get better.

Yikes on the neck probs . My kid bro dealt with the same thing you are going through several yrs ago. He injured his neck fighting at work, he's a cop also. Work comp jerked him around sending him to chiropractor for almost 2 yrs, then they wanted to put him on narcotics. He's like yeah no that ain't gonna happen, i carry a gun to work.
He found an awesome surgeon in Chicago who fused 2 vertebra and fixed the problem. I'm currently recovering from lower back surgery Dr had to grind on 2 vertebrae to give nerves room to breathe. Dr said if I do nothing I'd be in splints within 3 yrs to help hold my feet up. Prior to surgery my feet would go numb, but no real pain.
Find yourself a good Dr, do extensive research on them, go as far as to google their name but throw "lawsuits " after the name, you'd be suprised what pops up.
In the interim, you might wanna try neck traction therapy Walgreens sells a bag that you fill with water, you hook the pulley system up to door at home and you let weight of the water pull your neck, and hopefully take pressure off the vertebra. I cant get the pic to upload, wish I could, its quite the contraption lol

Well I'm not your age but years of hard landings and hits from racing motocross and lifting ridiculously heavy objects (mostly sandstone while building our home) have taken their toll. At 31 years old I thought I was crippled after taking a thump to my back while while practicing on my track at home, later that night it was so bad I couldn't move without crippling pain!! Hospital X Rayed me and shot me up with pain meds, I was over a month working off the pain while going to work everyday. It would come back and bite me hard off and on and always take forever to work itself back out so something had to change. Going to a back specialist lead to an MRI which finally shined some light on the real issue, mines in the lower back and has the same symptoms as yours accept issues are all below the waist. For me 1 visit to a physical therapist is all I needed, I learned how to avoid aggrevating it and how to counteract it.... over 2 years with no issues as of now. The options I was given were shots, physical therapy and surgery. Drugs are out, those nerves are telling you to lay off and numbing them in my book only opens the door to further damage. The surgery for a herniated disc is actually a very simple outpatient surgery where they make an incision and trim the bulge off with a lazer. I've talked to many who have had it and they all say it's instant relief. Downside is there's an 8 week healing time for the outer band of the disc to regrow. For me it's, stretching, back bends and lots of activity that keeps it at bay. Here's mine, pretty easy to see where the spinal cord is being pinched!

I have 2 broken vertebrae in my low back from a childhood injury that have caused me a lot of nerve pain over the years. I consider myself very lucky to have been able to manage it without surgery or anything more than occasional ibuprofen. I'm only 43, but the things I've found to make the biggest differences for me are:

- Regular strength training. Doesn't have to be mega-rigorous, but it doesn't take long from when I slack off or take a break from weights to when the pain starts up again.
- Yoga/stretching. Laugh all you want about yoga, but 15-30 mins, 3 times a week has been life-changing.
- Reducing the amount of sugar in my diet. I don't know if I'm sugar-sensitive or what, but cutting back on sugar and increasing the amount of plant-based fats (avocados, tree nuts and seeds) has made a significant improvement in inflammation and my back and joint pain in general.
- A good quality bed and pillows, and a good sleeping position. Don't underestimate how much of a difference your sleeping position can make!

I got tired of slogging to the gym every day, so I modified my routine and I can do all of my strength training, yoga, etc. at home with a pull-up bar, adjustable dumbells and a sturdy chair. I have been able to dramatically improve not just my back but virtually all of my joint and muscle pain pretty well with 20-45 mins of exercise 6 days per week.

Good luck, Steve, hopefully you get some relief soon.

I have a titanium ball on my upper arm bone, got snapped off in a motorcycle wreck. It has been a problem every since. But I signed up for a kickboxing, exercise class. After about 4-5 weeks almost all the pain went away and hadn't felt that good for a long time. I think exercise & stretching can be a big help. BTW I'm 56 wreck was in 04.

Hey Steve, sorry to hear you are having to deal with these issues. My wife has some pretty painful back issues and she has to go in and have nerves burned every couple of years. I am not sure if this is the best course of action, I would think you would want to deal with the root cause. The nerve burning does give her relief, so I just have to trust that the doctors know what they are doing. All the best to you, I hope you get relief soon!

Without reading the whole thing have you tried an inversion table? they are great for my back and you can get one for peanuts on Craigslist.

Thanks for the replies. Im not nearly as bad as some of you guys. I give you all a lot of credit for handling it they way you do. I will heal up soon then i need to work out as that always helps and stretching also. The doctor mentioned degenerate back/ neck issues as to be expected with 44 years full time in the trades, plus moonlighting for at least 30 plus of those years. Still at it PT and i have to look myself in the mirror and admit i may need to stop soon. Its a ego thing in some ways i guess. We shall see but waking up so early in discomfort like i had is a new thing for me. Thanks again

Steve that sucks man!!! I know the feeling what with my back issues. Just a suggestion here...Stop using Advil and do not use Motrim as they are not as effective as Aleve/Neproxium. It is an NSAID/No-Steroidal Anti Inflametory Drug. It will deal with the pain much better than what you have been taking. Dr's perscriptions are more powerful than the over the counter, but at 220 mg's per pill, you can take up to 3 and be fine. Man it has worked for me on my back and when I was suffering with Gout real bad. Supplement that with heat and ice alternatively as the heat cause the blood to flow faster causing more pain and the ice will reduce the inflamation and swelling in the disc that is causing the discomfort. Hope that you do not need to go under the knife as that is a last resort. As of now my back is under much better control...re: no more pain, but as I age more it will most likely have to have it happen. Stay well...cr8crshr/Tuck:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::usflag::usflag::usflag:
