Hi Racers,
OK let me set this up right so to have all pertinent info.
I am installing a 727 s/b non lock up stage 2 tranny PK 3898866 from a 1984 truck 318. With a Hughes 3000 hi stall converter in a 1973 Plymouth Road Runner 360. The 727 tranny coming out of my Road Runner PK 4329438.
Here's my question: Are these two transmissions interchangeable? Will the new 727 mount up in my Road Runner using the Hughes 3000 torque converter? I've tried installing the torque converter on the flex plate and could not line up the input shaft. Is it possible to put the torque converter on the input shaft on the tranny then raise them as one unit then mount the four flex plate bolts?
BTW I'm having to install this tranny from the ground using 4-6 ton jack stands, one floor jack, one bottle jack and a motorcycle jack.
Any suggestions??? All comments welcomed.

Install the converter into the trans first and that will solve your dilemma...Then install the trans...

Nation74 is right on. Just remember that when putting into the trans that you are lining up 2 sets of splines and the notches that drive the trans pump. Takes some jiggling to accomplish. When in all the way there is about an inch between the front lip of trans back to the ring gear on the converter. Also the converter should have small amount of play between the flexplate and the converter when transmission is bolted up. Do not force anything...

Question?
Is the Hughes 3000 converter designed for use in a lockup converter type transmission. If not the converter will not drop in the 83 lockup transmission you are trying to use.

Can be easier if you stand the tranny up on tailshaft to drop in convertor.

Line the torque converter up to the flexplate where all four bolts line up and mark it with a shot of spray paint. One of the holes is offset.

If you are going from a 318 to a 360 don't you need a balanced converter for the 360?

I can see a hour job here taking days. But that how it goes sometime when learning something new.

Wow-you guys lay it on thick-if nothing else you are thorough.
Thank you one and all-the input is simply AWESOME.
And I am proud to report a100% success on the install. I followed your advice to the letter and in less than 2 days I concord the beast!!
I really could NOT have done this without your guidance.
Thanks again for all the great advice and experience.
See ya at the track- I Hope I Hope
PS I LOVE this site. :))))))))))

If you are going from a 318 to a 360 don't you need a balanced converter for the 360?
No-I believe it is internally balanced. And the tranny is non-lock up and so is the Hughes 727 24 H/D 3000.
But good looking out-very pertinent question. Had I not consider that possibility I might have been doomed or worst straight out of the gate. lol

and when you get them together , make a bracket that will hole the converter in the trans while your getting it into position . i bolt it to the threaded holes on the bottom of the trans bell flange .

NOW I Am Stumped - seems to be a pattern lol.
Following my Torque Converter & Stage 2 Transmission (both non-lock up) I had an opportunity to test drive her and there is a "new noticable vibration".
Is that to be expected of the Hughes 727 24 3000 HD converter? Or, is this a tranny issue?
What the hay?

Does your converter have any balancer weights on it?

Yes I am aware I rushed to install without paying closer attention to what all members were trying to tell me - stuff I needed to be looking out for. I thought the converter was internally balanced. I was wrong. My bad. I won't be making this mistake again any time soon.
New issue though...
What causes brakes to lock up when applied and the pedal stays down where I have to take my foot behind the pedal to unlock the brakes?
I just tried exchanging the Master Break Cylinder with no change.
Anyone taking there time to help me I will respect you directions!!!!!
