Took rear end out of 67 GTX during re-build yesterday and to my surprise they were 3:55 and not 3:23. See pic.
This leads me to ask the question was 3:23 standard in GTX with automatic and 3:55 an option?
Also, any idea what the white paint means.....093? (build sheet #?)

I do not have the build sheet and I am confident the rear end is original to the car.

Thanks.

If you have a fender tag what are the numbers under the AX? A 6 under the A would be 3.55. An 8 under the X would be a suregrip. A 4 under the A would be 3.23 originally.

Under the A is a 4 and Under the X is an 8. So based on this it looks like the gears were changed at some point.

Weeellll, it’s 51yrs old! 3.55 is a good all-round ratio.

Forgot to really answer original question, 3.23 was an almost universal ratio back then for everything. Anything else an option or part of an option.

i may be wrong but i do not think that is the original rear end for your 67 GTX ,, from the picture it looks to be a sure grip unit ( cone/spring type ) not available till 1969 ,,,,should have been a Power Lock clutch type unit .

You are correct young man. The date reads 11/12/69. Good call. Still its a very good looking rear end. And it should handle the 440 re-build just fine.

What does this number mean on the outer casing of rear end?

See Pic. Thanks. 2881489

It's a tapered pinion which uses a crush sleeve. They came out starting in 68. And right now would be a good time to pull out the carrier and take the cone type Sure Grip apart and check the clearances on the cones.
