when living in California early 2000's a friend living about 2 miles from me had a # matching Cuda 440 ,4 speed 6pak, (yes, I know it's an E body)the engine was out of the car in his garage being rebuilt. the car sat alongside the access to the garage while he worked on the Cuda. Sacramento county abatement had decided car's not licensed or in operating condition could not be seen from the street, stupid regulation. county abatement officer came by told him the car could not be parked where it was with no engine in it. he replied he owned the property and car and no one was going to make him move it. he was cited and given a time period to move the car or it would be towed away as "eyesore" junk. he was resolved to leave it as it sat.the abatement officer drove by several times to see if it had been moved-when the time limit was up- the abatement officer, a tow truck and a sheriff arrived as the sheriff held the owner at bay, the car was put on a rollback truck and taken away as junk/deserted abandoned vehicle-it then became the property of the tow company. he went to the tow company and wanted to pay the tow bill and pay to have it returned to him. the tow company -now owners of the Cuda said- if you want the Cuda rollery the price is $10,000.00, taken away as junk, a day later it is a rare cuda and the owner set the price.
he did not have any way to get 10K and-lost the car.. (trying to remember was a 6 pak available in the Cuda's?) memory is just- a memory.

He fought the the law and the law won. That was just dumb on his part. Being a suborn *** gets ya no where. Just comply and keep it moving.

Why would you ever even take that risk, simply for spite?

Those regulations are there to protect the value of the property in his community.
He should have followed the rules.
If everyone had a "project" vehicle beside the house. The neighborhood would suffer.

Also, how many here have seen those "projects" sit under tarps for decades?

I lost two cars back in the day to that.

First was a '70 satellite we had pulled the bad motor out and were getting a motor ready to go in. It was sitting in the back parking lot of my friends apartment. One day it disappeared. Turned out the building owner had it towed. Said he didn't know who owned it and didn't bother to ask.

Second was a '71 Satellite Sebring Plus. It quit running on me and was sitting on the street in front of the duplex we lived in. It sat there two days and disappeared on the third. I called the police to report it stolen and was informed that they had impounded it for being illegally parked in a snow route (wasn't even winter) and it would cost $500 to get it out. This was back in the '80's and I was working for $4 an hour. No way I could just hand out $500 at that time. Lost it to police auction sale.

I understand why they do it, and they are trying to keep things from looking trashy, but give me a break!

In the 90's, a friend of mine decided he wanted to run a little Mod 4 on the local dirt track. We had the trailer sitting next to the garage. I came home one day to a ticket for "Tires and Refuse" posted on my door. I went to the courthouse to dispute it and told them that the only tires on my property were the race tires. They said I can't just leave them laying about. I told them they are mounted on the tire rack of the trailer. Their response...."Are they visible?". I said yes, they were visible on the tire rack of the trailer. They said I needed to cover them up.

Stupid!!

Yup....as lenient as the city is that I live in, they came to my place one time in 34 years and told me I had to clean up the area BEHIND my shop that no one could see unless they walked down the easement. It all stemmed from the neighborhood fighting my neighbor across the street from me to clean up his mess which had several junk cars in his back yard and a pretty good mess out in front of his garage. Well, since the moron across the street had to clean up, he was going to make everyone do the same no matter how small the infraction was. I was already working on my mess anyways when the city showed up but yeah, if you are going to live in an area that has those rules and you break em, you will pay in one way or the other if you don't follow them. At least the city I live in doesn't have people driving around just looking for every little infraction but will respond when someone complains about something.

Oh,... and the refuse was an extra bag of garbage sitting next to the garbage can to be picked up the next morning!!

I installed a fence to keep my junk from being visible from the street. If they can see it, then they should not be in my F'in yard. Not that I have a huge mess in my yard I tend to keep it up. But if you get a chance to clean it up, move a car or what ever they say is the infraction is just do it save yourself the grief.

I had a female neighbor, she was on the city council, that did drive around looking for issues. She cycled the local police to hassle the citizenry on things she didn't like. One day I came home to a citation on my front door, written by a cop, that I needed to remove construction debris and a abandoned vehicle in my yard. Small town, so I called the mayor, who called the police chief, and they met at my house. When they saw the "construction debris" (which was newly delivered fencing lumber on a pallet) and the "abandoned" (but inspected - licensed - parked in the driveway, and driven daily) 1972 El Camino, they summoned the officer to explain. He admitted that is was my city council neighbor who filed the complaint and badgered him into writing the citation. We all walked to her house that morning to have a discussion. Her only response then was she needed to consult her attorney, as she was now being harassed. Kind of funny, but not really.

My neighboring city is like that....and is pretty much the city I grew up in from age 12 to 18. A buddy lives on this nice street where there are also 'members' of the city living there. It's amazing the crap they pull off. They get away with stuff that the 'regular' residents get citations for. He's always fighting with them but he's also smart and knows how to play game. His house WAS the worse looking house on the whole street with his front porch being used for storage of all his lawn equipment and more. His roof had patches on patches and most of the trim was rotting off lol. Looking at his house you would think he's derelict but he's not even close.....he's actually a millionaire! And I like your avatar and was just talking to a friend about old Alfred this week. Used to be a big fan of Mad Magazine....

Good thing George Washington and others just complied with the laws from King George huh?

Lol, In some cities you could be fined for non-plated stuff in the driveway and that could add up pretty quick once they've issued the 1st warning.
And to think back, there was once a time some of us wanted stuff towed off at no cost!
Back in "the day" I drove a $100 383 4bbl auto Charger home a mile or so in reverse. No forward. Pulled the engine and tried to give the rest to the first JY that would just come get it. I gave him the title and the JY driver gave me $20 after he hooked up the car. I didn't turn down the cash, gas was around $.40 / gal. back then and moving up!

No way in hell would i live in a place where others could tell me what i could have in my yard. Just doesn't sound very American at all. Fight back!

Yuup. Most '60s and '70s cars were considered junk by the 1980s. These things rusted out quickly, engines began failing at 50k miles. It cost more to fix/repair them up than they were worth. We had dirt track stock classes that ran the 50 series Chevys and Fords. Bronco class they called it. You could buy those for a song. Now we have the renaissance where these '50s, '60s, and '70s machines are put on a pedestal, except by the city, who still views them as a nuisance, if they're parked in your yard, with no engine, and no hood, and no car cover, and its covered by garden hoses, and the kids blow up pool, and...

lol! And none of my 60's and 70's cars had engines that were failing by 50k miles.....must be a Chevy thing :D

in the 50's valve job at 50K was common.

by the mid 60's that was pretty much figured out, but still could be an issue about 70-80K

When did the 5/50,000 warranty start?
