I have recently been looking at a 1970 Roadrunner for sale. By the pictures it looks like a very nice car but have not seen it yet in person. The car has a roadrunner VIN. No fender tag. The owner is not a mopar guy and didn’t know about the radiator support number or the trunk lip number. He says he looked and couldn’t find a number any either place. Couldn’t be buried in the paint but obviously the guy won’t let me sand that off. The broadcast sheet is also gone. Advice I’m looking for is do I pursue the car not truly knowing if it’s a roadrunner or someone just swapped out the dash and vin and badged it a roadrunner? Like I said very nice Six pack car but without fender tag, body numbers, it makes me nervous not truly knowing.

Welcome from nevada what does the title say are you looking for a numbers matching car or just a project there are a lot of clones out there good luck with your search

Thanks guys. The title has the same roadrunner VIN as the dash. Ya I am worried about a clone with not a single other number on the car besides the dash VIN claims the owner.

Welcome aboard! I grew up in Missoula and also lived in Great Falls for a few years. We could use a few pictures is you have them.

Here’s some pictures mainly worried about it being a genuine roadrunner with only a dash VIN and no other numbers the owner claims.

Don't buy it unless you look at it in person. End of discussion.

In the meantime, welcome to the support group. I'm a Moparholic.

I know I need to look at in person. I am just wondering if it’s even worth looking at if the only thing that says it’s a roadrunner is the dash VIN????

Welcome to FBBO from NorCal Sierras

Maybe
I'd post up the questions in the other various appropriate forums
the general discussion forum or the year specific forum etc.
this is just the welcome wagon, not anywhere near as many viewers
& IMO you'd get a better response in another forum, more advise,
it's not intended as a Q&A forum here really either...

Good luck & Happy Moparing

Going to be a driver toy not looking for a top show car. The owner doesn’t understand numbers or clone cars. He has it priced as a roadrunner. To me the price needs to be knocked back because it can’t truly be known that it’s a roadrunner. I just don’t want to pay roadrunner price if possibly it’s not. Just looking for peoples opinions on it.

Personally, I'd go look at it and confirm that it is a real RR, and see if he is willing to negotiate. If not, move on.

Here's my take on the car....for what it's worth. It is a beautiful car, so don't take any of this the wrong way. A missing fender tag is "fishy" on such a rare car.
1. If you are paying big money, then show the owner your cash & demand to see the VIN numbers on the radiator core support & the trunk lip, under trunk seal, up close to the top driver's side corner behind the window...at least that's what "I" would do.
2. The birds on the fenders look a little far back, so I strongly suspect it has been repainted, nicely, but repainted.
3. Take a very close look at the dash (it looks restored) to see if there is any welding on/around the dash frame. I "think" it was just Roadruners & GTX's that got the rally dash, so if it's original you can rule out a Satellite or Belvedere (somebody correct me if I'm wrong on this). It can be changed, but it's a pretty big job.
4. A 440+6 spd car should have a Dana rear end
5. Any 440+6 car (or Hemi) should have a skid plate under the front engine cross member.
6. Does it have power steering? I "think" a 6pack car would have a power steering cooler built into one of the lines.
7. The radiator would be an 056???? (other guys here know WAY better than I do) if it's an original 440 car.
8. The last number of the VIN should be stamped on the block, I think towards the front of the engine, passenger side, right above the oil pan, on a machined 1/2" x 3" pad.
9. It should have an "offset horseshoe" in the center of the harmonic balancer (70 six packs are "big rod" motors)
10. I think the last numbers of the VIN should be on the transmission somewhere too. It also should be an 18-spline input shaft vs. a 23-spline, but I personally don't know how to tell them apart with the transmission in the car.

SIX PACK EXPERTS PLEASE CHIME IN & CORRECT ME WHERE I'M WRONG.

I think I'd move on. Reason being w/o any of the verifiable numbers on the car you also have to worry about what kind of damage it may have been thru and had to have all that stuff replaced. Even if it is a RR you may be able to find something better out there. Seems kind of dodgy to me.

Hey thanks for the information guys ! It’s not a true 6 pack car. That’s why it doesn’t have those extras on it. I’ll take a look at those things you mentioned. He’s asking $38,000 for the car.

When you look at it shine a bright light across the top and the numbers should be visible.
