What do you guys use for starters?
This is one I bought from a parts store and it won't even bolt onto the motor securely do to clearance issues. It wants to hit the block up high and won't draw in on the front

Engine is a 440, probably came from a motor home originally.

Looks like you need the terminal relocators, from the pic, best I can see.
There was a member on FABO that was selling them, I think I posted the link some where..ill try to find it.

I believe mine was from an 80s Ram? Seams to me I had to modify the insulated strap they put on them to gain clearance or just wire it without... can't remember but it fit afterwards. Even the mini starters are pretty much a copy of that same setup and are a snug fit do to where the terminals are located.

The starters going back to Napa.
I like 747Mopars idea. I have several parts Dakotas and I think one of them may work.
Worth a try anyway

I had a similar problem years ago with putting a dakota starter in my 383.
Just grind off the problem area on the starter.
I think my wiring connections were OK though. You might want to try a starter from a Dakota.

I use a Dakota starter, I think its for a 95, but its worked great, only thing I had to do was to remove the terminal extender block because of clearance issues, and it was good, no fitment issues, but this is also on a 340.

I had this on mine. I also removed the plastic black piece. Also it's easier if you can hook up the wiring before installing the starter.

So spent a little time over the weekend on the car. Lots of work and little progress! First the mini starter I got didn't want to pull down flush on the tranny. After some looking with the flash light I found this!

See the raised boss there with the smudge on it, yep had to remove it, was rubbing on the block. I removed that and got almost there. I had to take .020 off the snout pilot then she went in like it was supposed to. Next up kick down linkage.

Same boat here. Lots of effort, Little progress.
I got about 5 more nights of working on her, then she's going back into storage until late June.
Hopefully by then I'll have the power steering figured out, and have the shifter linkage freshener up and figured out.

I'm using a powermaster that I bought from summit like 17 years ago...don't recall the model but it was probably the only one they sold for Mopar 440 back then. Has worked surprisingly well on the 440 with both hooker and tti headers

I also had to clearance the block. There was some casting flash keepin the starter from sitting flush.

I don't see any of that on my block.
I think it's just the location of the terminals

Beekool, here’s my DB with ‘mike67’s’ above post about the terminal kit. Haven’t put it on yet. Maybe it’ll help. Jeff

I broke down and ponied up for the Robbmac starter.
The reason is that I didn't want to put a parts store reman starter of questionable quality in the car and have it crap out.

I have to pull the header to install or remove the starter and that didn't sound like a road I wanted to go down.

I put a DB Electric on my Challenger build and its been working fine for 3 years. Good fit. Getting ready to put one on my GTX. They are on EBay for $75.00 free shipping.

I also had to clearance the block. There was some casting flash keepin the starter from sitting flush.
I had to take the peen end of a hammer to my head to get this R2R distributor in

I found this Chrysler starter. I think I may have it overhauled at a starter shop.
It has no clearance issues.

It was from one of my Dakotas.

Well there ya have it, as I mentioned, Dakota starter less the terminal extension block for the win!!! Looks like the one I am using minus the Chrysler plate and I have about the same amount of clearance on my 340.
