Went to set the valves on Saturday and get the car running. As I was baring the engine over I heard a bunch of water hit the floor. It came out of #4 spark plug hole. So I tore the head off and sent it to my shop to be tested. The photo shows the big crack. Glad I found it before it was too late, but not in my plan that is for sure. Anyone have success repairing in this area? Thoughts.

Man that sticks, might be hard to get in there and weld that. It’ll take a pro for sure. Lucky you didn’t hyro the motor and break a bunch of stuff.

Yup. As mad as I am right now, I keep telling myself how much worse it could of been. Looks like the 440 is getting dusted off.

What head is that? Had a friend just go thru this last year, would drain the water down after each race. He had the head checked and welded but still seeped water after it cooled down and sat. He had indy EZ heads, just curious if same head.

I've seen so much carnage with Indy parts over the years. I'm sure there are many that have had great results with them but I wouldn't use their products......

I think this is a case of the porter taking it too thin and not an actual casting issue.

Could also be a case of core shift in the casting and being too thin in that area. Stock castings have been known for that. It gets expensive if you don't sonic test first...

something I would do is check all the other short turns for thin spots. there could be some core shift.

Truth be told the economical fix is pulling the exact same heads that are sitting on my 440 in the corner of my garage and swapping the springs over to fit the 511’s roller cam. They only flow about 15 CFM less then the ones on my 511. Shouldn’t loose much power. Heck, the mid lifts flow better on those heads so it may not change or even be slightly better.

Good idea, but it still sucks; big time. Lucky you caught it.

i'd try it. the valve sees mid-lift twice, peak only once.

I feel your pain after ordering a new crank for mine. We have a local guy, Chris Razor. He is the premier head/block welder in the Detroit area. I'm sure there are others.
