Ok, here is my Quandry.
Bought a 1968 runner from a family friend. Engine was rebuilt by a shop in Altoona Pa. I have no idea if it is a good shop or not(I don’t live near Altoona).
I could take it to a shop with a dyno for break-in and check out. Roughly $1000.
Motor was “refreshed” not sure if it was bored.

Is it worth it?

Opinions?

Joe can you call the shop? is the motor a stock rebuild ? If so no dyno. run it in the car . day on the dyno should be about $500 including fuel.

Thank
You to everyone.
I figured I could do the break-in in the car.
I just found out there is a small shop 1/4 mike from my place with dyno. I’m going to stop by and chat with them. I’m 2 yrs out from needing it. So maybe I could get it down there and they could do it at their leisure.

I think I have some paperwork I’ll have to do some digging. Lindy’s seems very possible.

Thanks

I paid 500 for my last dyno session.
Yes, it is worth it IMO

The last engine we did was a 340 built a bit above stock. We took it to a local shop with a dyno, and paid around $350 for the break-in run, and tuning. It's run great since the install, and thought it was well worth the time & $$...

Joey,
I use ASA Performance by Ed in McCandless to dyno tune my Coronets as he has a Mustang chassis dyno. He is about a mile or two south of the Pennsylvania turnpike on route 8. He is about $500.00 for the tune and is one of the only guys that know what a carburetor looks like in the Pittsburgh area. He rebuilt my 440 and stroked it to 499 and it runs great. He has been my mechanic for the last 8-10 years.

I know all those guys personally, lived in Altoona all my life until I moved 20 mi into the country.Lindy's is an auto parts supply, they don't or never did engine rebuilding. There is/was only about three or four builders and I wouldn't have had a problem with any.I would be inclined to think it would probably be either Automotive Supply Co or Fred Dodson Auto machine depending on how long ago.At one time there was G&M Auto Supply and Superior Auto parts but they have been gone a long time.
Need any more insight, get in touch.
Thanks

Also,if you want someone else close,Tom Hemphill in Clarksburg is your man !

i would ask is it worth it to have to remove a leaking engine or some internal screw ups that can be found during dyno time, when all that can be found before eng install, yes it is worth it for me. usually dyno is about 500-600,i know some shops will rip you on price.

Looks like Fishers Auto Parts did work or subbed it out.

That was originally Automotive Supply until they were bought by ( Federated) Fisher Auto parts,Automotive had been around since the 50's,did a lot for me,you should have no problem with their work. The fellow's name on your invoice is a personal friend of mine, talk to him at least twice a month,if you want a phone number,PM me,he would be more than happy to talk to you.

For the average Joe or stock engine, no. For an performance engine or all out race engine, yes. We have 42, yes 42 individual engines dyno's running all day everyday & night. We run thousands of engines per year. You would be surprised of how much of all of the aftermarket parts have issues that would be more difficult to diagnose in the vehicles.

If you have the money I say dyno it. I did my first dyno a few yrs ago and it was wort every penny. Just as 6pkrtse mentioned about aftermarket parts being bad, this happened to me.
I had a distributor converted to a pertronix and I had brand new firecore plug wires
Motor fired right up sounded a little weak, but to someone who did not know any better you'd think thats bad ***. Come to find out the guy who rebuilt my distributor used a close but no cigar pertronix kit. I sent distributor to pertronix. They put it on their machine guess what the firing was 20 degrees off of where it should be. Pertronix actually made a kit for my distributor part # confirned the advance rates etc and sent it back to me NO CHARGE. I am very pleased with their customer service.
The brand new plug wires were so bad the resistance was over 10k on the #5 wire every wire was bad some worse than others. Firecore took them back checked them out and got the same readings as me. They too have great customer service, made me new wires and sent them out. Although couldnt explain why all the wires were bad, but new wires were in spec. Id do business again with Rich.
Back to dyno my buddy ran home yanked out his distributor and wire set both had seen some mileage, but in good shape, I picked up over 100 hp because of ignition probs. If I broke motor in the car, I wouldve figured it out sooner than later but my sanity and time were worth my 500.00 spent. Plus over the yrs building stuff I figured once in my life I'd do this, and glad I did.
