Aftermarket Tach recommendation

I don't want to butcher anything up on the car so I'm looking at autometer or similar that I can mount to the steering column. It's a 4 speed 69 roadrunner so no obviously no shifter on the column. I've looked around but there are so many choices and half are digital.
Also a recommendation for a mounting kit would be great. Pictures and info on yours appreciated
 
Are you running msd ignition?
 
Autometer on mine. It's not the best (plastic housing and plastic mounting foot) but it fits on the car and works with Pertronix multi spark. I had it on my shelf collecting dust as I was going to put it on my 62 but didn't have enough room on the column.

Does your tach connect to the coil?
 
how did you attach it to the column? I found this but I'm not sure how it would work

Mine is attached quite crudely with a thick black zip tie. Non permanent. The foot mount on the tach has screw holes so I want to fabricate a padded, u shaped bracket to make it more solid.

The bracket you posted may not work without modifications as the column bulges out near the rear so it won't lay flat.

I agree. I need to man up and pull my cluster. Just not brave enough to tackle the job at this time, but it would be nice to convert my factory tach for msd.
 
Because I'm too lazy to tear that dash apart again, that's a royal PITA. I'f I had a brain, I would have done it when I had it apart last spring but I didn't so now 'm looking to shortcut until or if I decide it's worth the time to do it right
My first choice would be a factory in-dash tachometer as well...... BUT, if you don't want to pull the dash, I would suggest the "old school" Autometer/Autogage type tachometer.

Option #1 I've seen several over the years with just a giant hose clamp holding it to the steering column. They come with a mounting "arm" which you could massage slightly to make it more rounded & fit up against the column...maybe put some bicycle inner tube rubber underneath it to protect the column paint?

Option #2: I ran an Autometer tach for YEARS & didn't want to drill any holes. I used a longer screw for one of the convertible top switch holes UNDER the lip of the dash with the bracket turned upside down. Only one screw held it in just fine. I still have that tach/arm somewhere if you're interested. You might look under your dash for a place that already has a screw (I'm talking about under the upper dash lip....maybe even one of the heater control screw holes....with a 1/2" longer screw)

I very well may be interested in that arm. U have a picture of it?

No way ! 3 screws and the black off plate comes out from behind the dash ... I Thought i was going to have to pull my cluster as well, but I decided to take a look underneath. To my surprise I noticed it was wide open, took the 3 screws out and removed the blank plate. In went the tach, extremely easy ....

I still run ole trusty. An Autometer 5" shift light Monster tach that I bought back mid to late 80's.
