I know this isn't a Blue Oval place but I figured I'd share my days experience with you guys.
Monday the tranny in my F350 finally **** the bed on me. I bought thus truck 5 years ago from a welding shop where I get my supplies. Good people they sold it to me dirt cheap because the tranny was going out. Changed the F&F, added 2 quarts of Lucas and it got by for another four years of farm duty.
I really need this truck (7.3L) 4wd for spring duty so I spent today dropping the tranny. There's a shop 40 miles away that will have one rebuilt by Friday.

This has been a good vehicle, has 290k on the odometer. I complain only for the couple typical Ford reasons.
Too many of the bolts required twelve or. Metric sockets. When ordering a different tranny and sensors there were too many variations, so I couldn't get the parts ordered until I had them in my hand. And then there was this:

There are not torque converter bolts, just torque converter studs, 6 of em. I foresee this being a pos when it comes time to reinstall.
Any suggestions?

Hold it up to the flywheel before putting the tranny back in. Figure out the position it needs to be and put a paint mark on the flywheel and tq so you know how it needs to be oriented on installation.

7.3 navistar one of the best out there.

Handy truck.
The previous owner were good fabricators, made the flat bed. The hauled 20 foot sticks of angle iron with it.
The bed has a telescoping platform with lights. And a 40 gallon fuel tank.
Even if the truck goes to hell, I'll salvage the bed and put it on a different dually.

The 7.3 IS a good engine but who makes the trans? I do know that Ford has been a big bag of mixed parts since the 60's and only got worse it seems with major mid year changes and sometimes several mid year changes. I had my fill of them around the mid 70's and went back to Mopars and never looked back. But.....in late 79 I had to try them one more time with a 79 Mustang for my wife. Got a good deal on it and with 17k miles, what could go wrong?? The car was ok for a lot of years but a V6 was supposed to be in them in 79 but they had some production issues (according to Ford) and mine got a 200 straight 6. Every time I went to the auto parts store, I had to give them the VIN number so I'd get the right crap and somethings even that didn't do it. Got deeevorced 5 years later and she drove it for another 5 or so years and bought an Aerostar.....yuk city! Well, heck....after all, she had a Pisser when we met

Me and my brother in law drove up to Wisconsin a couple months ago and bought an old ford van turned into an ice cream truck basically just so we can get the 7.3 engine and drivetrain our of it. Plus the big *** coolers were a perk!

I like the Dana front and rear axles in it as well

I will say about ford trucks that those ******* things are built like a semi. We replaced the front suspension on my brother in laws f250, wheel hub to wheel hub and I was very impressed with everything I seen. Everything was oversized it seemed and you could just tell it was very well built.

Father in law has an 01 7.3 with 800k on it, was used as an otr hotshot truck for years... First water pump at 400k. It was stil working great but thought it needed to be changed, when it was pulled the o ring turned to dust, but there was no play in the shaft..
It's been pretty impressive and I'm not a Ford guy.

What year is that truck? The 2011and up diesel trans have a valve body solenoid problem that starts at about 100000 if lucky. Only place to get a valve body if of course Ford.

FORD. Spelled backwards is DROF, which stands for Driver Returns On Foot.
FORD, circled the problem and highlighted it blue.
