Hey Folks; back to the old question do I build or buy a crate engine? The only twist is that it is almost impossible to find a big block crate motor in Canada. Any suggestions?
I have a couple of complete "mystery" motors 69 originally out of an Imperial but had work done to it but don't know exactly what, then a 74 motor that came in my 68 Charger but again God knows what is done with that one and I also have a 78 Block that has no ridge that I can start with. Any help for a Canadian boy?

Hey,

I'm a fellow Canadian in Kitchener/Waterloo area. I bought from Carolina Machine Engines and shipped here. Was a 522 Stroker 525hp/625Torque (actually dyno'd at 530/660)

CME was relatively easy to deal with despite doubling the expected wait time which I expected. I've now completely changed my plans and am procharging that 522.

As far as if you want to stay on Canada it' easiest just to find a good block and a reputable builder and have something built to spec. You'd likely be on par dollar wise and there's a wait lost either way

My old high school buddy Tim McCoubrey in Smiths Falls (Ont) understands MOPAR. In '79 he was pushing big blocks to bending push rods and playing with his own geometry and what not in his garage. 40 years later he's still building engines and top notch !

He's currently building a 440 stroker to 494 CI.

what coast. s&j motors out of washington sell them. Its a hop if your on that side.

Nick's Garage in Montreal. The Mopar expert in Canada. Hope he builds my engine some day.
I agree I see Nick all the time very good quality. He has built many quality reliable Mopars throughout the years and is a great person to deal with. Another option is Tom Kole @ TK race in Montreal, very good engine builder. Especially with Hemis, He worked for 4 or 5 years with Ray Barton when he was in Montreal Canada.

I am assuming that the CME 522 HYRDGOON mentioned was around $11,000, if it was a complete engine, plus shipping. That's a chunk of change, eh? You might look for ragged-out motorhomes or Newports with 440s as a start. Here are a couple of articles on 440 builds:

Hang in there and good luck.

Not sure what current prices are 4 years ago it was 8k intake to pan. I think I was about 8800 with carb and ignition included

PLENTY of good Mopar specific shops in Canada still selling Crate pkgs., we used to offer some ourselves that were entry level pump gas, Hyd Flat Tappet std 440 builds as well at 550hp/565Trq, 3,000 to 5,700 rpm, but these days with the CND peso exchange rate being what it is, and our business model being NOTHING leaves without being Dyno'd(hopefully with the customer present), things don't come cheap as most associate "Crate" Engines.... just say'in.... you GET what you PAY for.

Maybe try "The Block Shop" out by Edmonton Ab. ?
I think they still offer some 493/496/505 RB based Pkgs, I am NOT recommending anyone as I have NO continuity with what they do, just say'in I heard they still offer them.

Anyone have any dealings with D&M performance out of St. Catherine's Ont? I spoke with Mark Levine from there seemed nice and knowledgeable, but would like to be careful.

Thanks
