AMD 71 Charger quarter install. Very happy

Thought I would share a little info with other 71 Charger owners that may need quarter panels.
I just completed the installation of and AMD quarter skin on this 71. 72 would be the same situation.
On this car, I elected to use an AMD quarter skin, rather than a full quarter. Reason being, I didn't want to disturb the lead at the roof seam, or remove the back glass etc, plus the upper was all good, so I decided to leave as much original intact and undisturbed.
I used a new AMD trunk extension and reinforcement bracket as well. These panels are heavy gauge metal, just like original. They have the same flanges and dimensions as the originals too. I butt welded the new panel in place and metal finished the weld joint. No body filler required. The fit of this panel was excellent. The door gap, rear valance, quarter extension and wheelhouse fit was spot on. I cut the new panel 1 1/2 inches below the body line to keep the factory body line in place. I will re-lead the rocker joint as the factory did.
I could not be happier with the fit and quality of the panel. The marker light opening is accurate, and the flanges have crisp bends just like the original panel.

Nice to see a quality stamping. When I did my '71 the lower quarter ans spots around the wheel opening were rusted.
Only aftermarket quarters I could find in the late 1980's were JC Whitney and they may have well been flat sheets of steel (Junk.)
I ended up cutting them up for patch panels after shaping them to be close to what they should have been.

Nice work, I am in the process of doing a total restoration on my 71 440-6 Superbee. I have the car mounted on a rotisserie and just finished the front and rear full floor pans. Then I swapped it back onto the scissor lift to keep the car square while I cut out and replaced the full trunk pan and extensions. Then I moved onto the drivers side full quarter replacement and today the passenger full quarter. ALL was with the use of AMD quality replacement panels and the fitment was excellent . In the past I would have only addressed the minor rust spots with pieces of metal. But with the quality of the AMD stampings it was a no brainer to do this car right. Here is a pic of the drivers quarter after it was spot welded into place and after I cleaned, primed, applied sound deadner and painted the insides of the panel and structure prior to welding to ensure complete coverage and uniformity of the paint once the panels are in place and it’s impossible to reach certain areas

Looks great! For years we could not get any body panels for our 71 Chargers or the 71 Plymouths either. So nice that AMD chose to make panels for them!
 
I agree - I am going full bore on this project: today installed the passenger side quarter. Yesterday I prepped the panel, sprayed the sound deadner, painted the inside of the panel and the structure. Today installed and tacked into position, tomorrow final spot welding. Just so you know- AMD is in production with a repo of the air grabber (ram charger) hood! I spoke with them and they are doing final work on it now and it should be available by June. My car has the N96 ram charger hood but you may want to check it out

Some photos of the other side too. Used AMD quarter skin, outer wheelhouse, trunk extension, and the small filler piece behind the quarter extension (by the trunk lid). Fit of the AMD quarter skin was fantastic. Door gap is dead on. Virtually nothing for filler required to smooth the butt weld. Thanks Auto Metal Direct for making these much needed panels.

Many years ago at Carlisle,I was talking to a guy from AMD at Stephens Performance spot. He was showing me the prototype fenders for second generation Chargers. I asked him if he wanted to make sheetmetal for third gen Chargers and Road Runners,he said that he would like to make them if he could get some nice used or NOS panels to template them from. I said that a friend of mine is a big 71 b body enthuiest and had many pieces of NOS sheetmetal that he could template from. I said that I would go get my friend,and I introduced them,the rest is history! My friend repeatedly test fitted the panels for the third gen B bodies,and has offered many of his parts to be templated for production. Pretty much every piece AMD offers for third gen B bodies he has been involved in. My NOS 70 Charger front valence was also the template for the ones AMD sells too. We also test fitted many E body parts too.
