I searched the threads and opinions are all over the map. I want mufflers with the sound we have all grown to know and love, loud doesn't bother me. There is a big following for flowmasters but just as many that hate them. One thing I don't want is that annoying drone so give me your choice and I'll weed them out. Thanks

Also, can anybody tell me what size pipes came on the 440 cars from Ma Mopar? 2 /1/4,
2 1/2?

2 1/2 head pipes, 2 1/4 tail pipes or 2 1/4 reduced down to 2 over the axle

Depending on more factors than are reasonable to list here, the muffler itself may not be fully to blame for drone.

I have the dyno max mufflers on 2 cars. 1 drones, 1 dose t. You figure it out. Mufflers are cheap. Internet/you tube searches are cheaper. And I just don’t mean muffler videos sound clips ether!

The thing with flowmasters is there are a lot of different models offered. 40 series, 50 series, thunder, hush power etc. Some have a drone, some don't. This is true of most muffler manufacturers. But beyond that, PRM range and engine build as well as tailpipe size/length can affect the sound as well as muffler placement. My advice, go to youtube, type in the model and engine of your car you want to put mufflers on, type the word muffler after that and hit enter. Then listen to the various videos that come up and you'll get a decent idea.

While that is good tit know info, it doesn’t matter. The problem is many fold. Allow me to list.

What is “That sound we all grew up loving?”
I love a deep thunderous sound that is accented by a narrow LCA cam that has a certain crisp smack in it which can be found with high lift cams.

Others love the Flowmaster sound which is close but no where near the cigar. Depending on the Flowmaster of course.
Most just simply fail. But then again, a lot has to do with what and how and by whom the engine is.

You tube search!

Go down to car meets and ask the driver of the car what he is running as well as the build of the engine.

If you want to be sure not to have drone avoid mufflers that rely on noise cancelling baffles instead of glass packing. I love Flowmasters but have experienced the drone as well and it is annoying as hell! I now run straight threw Oval glass packs and have no drone plus it sounds great. As far as brand goes??? Some make way to much money off of their name, I just look at the construction and design. I like to see an equal size perforated tube threw the core with with smooth transitions (they typically make a slight S) and made from decent material not paper thin metal.

My current setup is a 3" stainless X pipe kit from Pypes with some off brand well made mufflers dumping out in front of the rears.... simple, pretty cheap and sounds great.

And there is a good mention!
How are you doing your exhaust?
True duals
H or X pipe
To the axle or bumper

Can you fit a long case under the car?

I have run the Hooker Max flow. Drone Reasonable sound level inside.
I have also run the Dyno Max VT. No drone, loud as F#%^!!!!

Longer the muffler case, the whiter in and out it will be.
I ran Hooker Aero Chambers. Minor drone at a small rpm band. Loud as heck above 3K.

All mufflers tried on the same car. Drone sound at different rpm levels. Amount of drone varied as well.

This is going to sound stupid! But one of the coolest sounds I have heard were Summit Racing’s mufflers on an old friends Ramcharger. A ‘79 w/a 360.
2-1/2 sized, no headers.

69 roadrunner so should have the room for pretty much whatever I want, right now it has duals with an H pipe going over the axle and out the rear with tips. I plan on keeping the same setup. The only reason I am replacing is that the car sat a long time before I got it and the pipes are pretty rusty not to mention it wasn't a very good installation. If you hit a bump, the right side pipe will hit the shock. I fully understand that there is not one muffler that is ideal on every car, I'm just after info on what you are using and why you do or do not like what you have. I don't want it to sound like open headers but I do want people to know it's coming

original mufflers for hemi's and 440's were 2 1/4". if your using 2 1/2" pipes the dyno-max super hemi turbo is a perfect fit and can be purchased in 2 1/4" or 2 1/2".

Mine had Flowmasters on it when I bought it. Judging from the sound and the description on Flowmasters site, I believe they are 40 series, and I'm pretty happy with them. I believe they have the sound you are looking for, BUT they do have that drone right around 1800 RPM (just as described on Flowmasters site). I have been told that an H or X pipe would eliminate it, but I just live with it.

Cherry Bomb oval stainless 3" on mine, no tips. I think they are straight through glass packs. Was put on car 8 years ago just before I bought it. I love the sound. The first time I drove it for an extended run on a 2 lane highway, a guy in a BMW pulled up beside me at a traffic light and told me it sounded better than his $2000.00 stereo! If that isn't a compliment, I don't know what is!

Has anyone here tried Classic Chambered Exhausts' chambered mufflers? I incorporated 2-3" and 2 resonators in my 65 Belvedere system but, I'm a year from firing up the motor.
Mike

Mild built 383, Hedman headers with 1.75" tubes, 3" collectors, 2.5" X pipe system from Pypes, Dynomax 17219 mufflers.

Sounds great and have no drone whatsoever.
