Switching out the 8 1/4 on my 69 Coronet to an 8 3/4 to prepare for a 500+hp motor upgrade. Does the 8 3/4 have to come out of a similar car or can any 8 3/4 be made to fit? New to the hobby so any direction is appreciated.

Check out the "sticky" in the axle section.

yea 500+ hp do it once the right way, I would get a dana 60 especially if you are going to beat on it. You could go the 8 3/4 way but eventually you will start to break pieces and the dollars will add up quickly with repairs and your car will be down for a while fixing it. Bite the bullet and pay for a dana 60 it will be cheaper then buying a 8 3/4 and building it up to try and handle that 500+hp and the furture cost of repairs. Just my 2 cents worth!

Ok, new question, would the Dana 60 need to be a frm a similar vehicle or is a Dana 60 a Dana 60 and I can fit it to the Coronet. Heading to the carlisle swap meet this weekend and don't want to come home with a part i can't use

you will want one out of a B body 68-70 car to fit your car

You need to look at overall housing width to make sure it fits and isn’t too wide or narrow. Would be nice to also have the correct spring perch locations, but those can be moved and rewelded into the correct place.

There's that incorrect chart again.

See sticky in axle section on this forum.

8 3/4: cheap, readily available but weak for your application

Dana 60: strong, less plentiful, much stronger in stock form

You'll need to shorten your driveshaft and you what 7290 or 1350 u-joints. What do you have now?
