It has to. It needs a nice, smooth arc so there is no binding of the cable inside.

Whaddayaknow, same as on my 68 Chargers and 69 Road Runner.

At least the newer cars went straight back. The early ones came out of the fender well, then crossed over the frame, past the transmission, then through the cross member.
