Hello, I recently purchased my first B body car, a 1962 Plymouth Fury 4dr. I have been a Mopar lover since being a teenager and have my share of A and E bodies but this is my first B body. I came across the car in a friends farmstead and asked him about it. It was not his but was brought to his place after another mechanic had given up on the car after tearing the engine apart and putting the remnants in the trunk and brought to my friends house. He graciously contacted the owner of the car and passed on my info to the owner. The owner then called me and we struck a deal for the car. After cutting down the weeds around the car, replacing the bias ply rotted tires, and unloading 300 plus pounds from the trunk, I loaded the car on my trailer and brought it home. I was going to try and save the old 318 poly motor but it was to far gone to save after sitting apart for 5 years in the trunk of the Fury. I found a 400 big block that will be transplanted into the car after being refreshed. That is where the project sits today and as funds and time allows I hope to get the car back on the road in the next couple of years.

Big Block will require a BB transmission with cable shift, unless you go stick.

Love the 62 four doors!!!! My avatar is my 62 Belvedere with the 318 Poly auto trans.

Great find! Could I suggest you pursue another 318 poly and get the car running quicker. Much more fun having the car a runner and much less initial effort just bolting another of the same style engine in place.

Then take the time to sort out and plan the big block conversion. You'll also have benefit of some wheel time to know what else you may want to update.

I bought a 65 Coronet wagon some years ago, assuming the 318 was shot. It turned out to be a pretty decent running engine, so I got everything sorted out with the 318 and figured I'd do the big block conversion later. I find I'm enjoying driving the car so much I can't yet bring myself to tear it apart. I put full dual exhaust with nice mufflers on it so it sounds good.

Good luck either way and enjoy!

Looks great. Love the 62s

Welcome to FBBO from sunny SoCal. Good luck with your project. Looks like a good one

The 318 poly and later is a tough reliable motor. I never gave it much thought in years past and most car guys didn't either thinking it was a good boat anchor with little interest in building up. The plan for the poly in my '63 when I got it 20+ years ago was going to be yanked for a 360 or bb someday. But the motor ran so damn strong I put it off for years until dumping a ton of cash rebuilding the poly last year. The build added around 50 horses and it's not a burn down the track ride that the bb guys would prefer. Yeah, ok it's a tad weenier than I would a liked; but gets up and goes fine for cruising. I also have to stop myself to think what the hell am I gonna do with another 50 or 100 horses anyway at my age driving it maybe 500 miles a year? I got into plenty of trouble in my youth with faster cars being unable to resist the added muscle and figure I'd be embarrassed having a cop half my age giving me a ticket.
