Looking for idea's on 65 Belvedere Tachometer Mounting

I have a 65 Belvedere that I am wanting to put a tachometer in. I don't want to dash mount it nor do i want to put in on the steering column.

Do any of you have experience putting them under the dash, (seems awkward to read) or a small one on the windshield driver side post. (looks like it would obstruct your vision)

I am thinking about a small tach as this is a street hot rod, not a race car.

I am out of idea's, any suggestions would be appreciated.
 
I used a small 2 1/2 6 grand autogage(autometer)on my stripper dually since it didn't come with a tach. It was mounted on top of the dash but under the overhang of the drivers side windshield post. Excelent visibility and unobtrusive. I also used the same location with a 3 1/2 Faria tach many years ago on a 57 chevy. I would use that location again absolutely. (On a side note, the faria was the best tach i ever had, accurate and FAST, but only usable with points and low power ignition, as the tach was in series not parallel from the coil. All energy passed through the tach.) Neither blocked vision at all.

Can not block view of necessities and can not be distracting to read. Next would be purpose. Does it need to be in line of sight or viewable.
Where ever you put it will its purpose be served.
Now get at it.

I put a 2 1/16 autometer vintage looking tach on my 64 Dodge column its just big enough to notice but doesnt block anything. Mine is mounted at the 2 o'cock position under speedo.

Well, now that I ready your post again....you might consider the A-pillar. It does block part of your view, but not too bad (you get used to looking around it when turning). I have several gauges on my *cough*...Mustang...on the A-pillar and it's not too bad.

Another option would be to mount the tachometer on the hood or cowl area. My Roadrunner is like that. You may want to seal it up with a little clear silicone to keep moisture out. It also blocks your view "slightly" BUT I personally don't like the idea of looking down under your dash while you're driving at high speed to check your shift points (but I drag race...just sayin').

Here is what I did with my gauges on my 62 Dart. I just made a new gauge cluster mount and even used the existing holes on the under side of the dash.

That looks good on your car. I am thinking more and more under the dash, on the right side where i have some gauges already mounted.

I have the same concern as you about looking down under the dash while driving. I don't drag race any more, but I do "occasionally" (cough) blow the carbon out of it. Thanks for the input, appreciate your insight.
 
This is beginning to look like the best option for me. I have three gauges already mounted in the same position as yours. I don't like the idea of looking down under the dash while I am driving, but then again, it's not like I am street racing or anything.

Yeah you do have to look down for it but it's graduated nicely enough to read it at a glance. When cruising I didn't find it hard to see, checking shift points. Makes it nice to see what it's idling at when sitting in traffic ect.

I didn't want to drill any holes in the dash. There wasn't enough room between the steering wheel and gauge cluster to mount it on the column on this '62.
 
Something I've been contemplating also. I dig the way the Roadster Shop did JJ's 64 Polara and wouldn't mind doing something similar looking, but much smaller scale (I don't need to support the stock column). Just make some kind of tubing that attaches the lower edge of the rolled part of the dash to mount the tach to.

Put a Dakota Digital instrument cluster in it. Tach will be in-dash, visible and won’t obstruct anything.
 
That looks nice, out of the way and still get the job done. What type of tach, gauges and mounting bracket is that?
We just made the gauge panel for the tach, temp, and oil pressure gauges. The gauges are Autometer classic. When making the mount don't do a 90 degree bend we ended up with a 70 degree bend.
