I have a '67 Charger with a 383. I added Equis aftermarket oil and temp gauges to give me peace of mind. The Equis OP gauge would read anywhere from 20 to 50 when at idle and at highway speeds. Most of the time at idle the gauge would fluctuate rapidly and you could not tell where it was at on the gauge, at highway speed it seemed like it would just stop at 50 everytime. I figured the gauge was bad and they gave me a replacement, put it in and in the shop it seemed to do what it is supposed to, again from 20 to 50 while reving the car up. Took it for a quick drive and its going crazy too, only worse! Why? This is a mechanical gauge BTW

Have you........
Verified oil level/quantity?
Checked for metallic particles in or aeration of oil?
Bled the oil line at the gauge?

Other possible causes…….
Pickup tube clogging or cracked.
Relief valve/spring on pump.
Slipping/damaged pump rotor or intermediate shaft.
Filter bypass issue.

Other than check the oil level I have done none of the items you mention Dave, but will. It works fine until the engine warms up.

Unless your oil is damn near empty, level/quantity is irrelevant.

Was there any motor work done prior to the gauge installation?
Did you run copper or plastic tubing? If plastic, any kinks?

Nope no motor work done. Its plastic and no kinks. Odd that it works fine when the engine is cold and as soon as it warms up to normal temperature it goes wonky.

Unless your oil is damn near empty, level/quantity is irrelevant.

What's "damn near empty"? 1 quart, a quart and a half, 2 quarts? No sense running more than you need I guess, eh?

"Damned near empty" means sucking air Dave. As long as you have enough oil so that the pump does not run dry, it WILL NOT affect oil pressure.

The oil is at the full level. I think I will replace the tube and fitting on the block to see if that helps any.
