After hours of researching and calling three venders, finally got what I think is close to the original paint they used for the hood treatment. Single stage with texture. Saved the formula as I think this is correct. :drinks:

Rumor is......The factory painted the black FIRST, then the rest of the body!
Strange, but true.

Weird, found the tech bulletin from January 15 1969 and I believe they are saying you have to apply the Black after the car is painted

To me, what you write makes sense. From Rick Ehrenberg at Mopar Action magazine, the black is first. He has a pretty good history of being right. I was 4 years old when the 69 models were new. I would have been too young to build cars at that age, even in China or Indonesia.

It does make sense to paint the black first. Less to mask off.

Then again, you don't want textured paint under your colour coat

Yeah I read that when I was looking for the formula. The road runner that I painted the hood treatment still had original paint and the black on the fenders. It wouldn’t make sense to paint the textured place then paint body color over it. That would be some serious orange peel where you would paint body color over the black. But different ideas for everybody.

On another note, there is no way you can get a sharp crisp line over texture paint when you mask it off for body color if it were to be done that way.

The black blows through around the edge of the hood onto the fenders and the cowl. Stripes first is an Urban Legend.

Black was last..Cars were send to dealer who installed the stripes...Mine was painted after the hood was painted...

EDIT--> I stripped the 70 air grabber hood down to bare metal and went through many coats of paint....the hood had been repainted at least 3 times. Down through the layers I could tell for sure that the black stripes (smooth in 70) were painted AFTER the hood color. There was body color paint underneath all of it. I think the only way I could've been fooled is if "maybe" someone got the hood completely down to bare metal at one time.

Well, at least on my 1970 OEM air grabber hood with hood stripes, it's pretty obvious that the stripes were painted separately at least. The black stripes are a few mils lower than the color coat. I will try to post more info as I find it since I am currently (today) sanding down the hood to re-paint the car. And texture may be correct for a '69, but it's smooth in '70

Care to share the paint formula?

Possible explanation for any of the stripe first cars could be dealer repairs.

The paint formula is posted in the link that PaveFE have posted. I’m gonna stick with the fact that the black were painted after the car was painted body color. Worked On few road runners that the hood treatment were untouched and they were painted after body color. Besides if you get overspray on black texture paint with body color, good luck trying to remove that. :popcorn2:
