So this is some sort of Japanese ammo box from WWII that my grandfather must have gotten when he was in the south pacific. Anyway, it looks like someone either carved out the original characters or carved something new into the lid of the box, was curious if anyone can read this and tell me what is says?

konichiwa! Uh...no, I can't read it :( I believe it's either hirigani or katakani (sp?) & one of those is very similar to Chinese....sorry I'm not more help.

it's Chinese. I'll ask a coworker tomorrow to translate. Japan and China both use kanji characters but these are not Japanese words.

It says "He Who Opens This Will Die A Horrible Death!"

Have you opened it yet?

It translates:
" NO, I not know where your cat is, stop asking please"

So, nobody has an answer, the translation or even the sites where you draw a character are also of no help.

Call any college or university close to you. Most now have Japanese and Chinese language courses. They should be able to put you in touch with a teacher who you can email the pictures to to get a translation. Good luck.

It probably says what was inside the crate . Looks like a gun crate to me !

A translator that works in Japanese language told me this does not look like actual Japanese writing. It appears that soneone made up characters artistically.
Supposedly the top characters are similar to the number 297. 二九七大
