Ignition Coil Leaking Oil Replacement

Hello, I previously posted about my fuel having gunk in it creating my car to stop running but now I have discovered that my Ignition Coil is leaking oil out the top (discovered when disconnecting the connection and saw it was filled with oil). Doing some research it seems this could be the cause for the carb flooding and engine to stop running possibly. Needless to say, I need to replace this Ignition Coil. The car was previously converted to electronic ignition as you can see from the photo of the orange box. The coil that is on the car today is the Jacobs part number 380672 and specs indicate 40,000v. Questions:

This thing mounts horizontally, because they are oil filled is it still ok to put the replacement horizontally?
Summitracing has the MSD Blaster 2 coils, are these good? They show 45,000v, is that OK and will still work?
I should be able to simply mount the new coil without the new supplied resistor, correct?
Anything else I should know with these things?

MSD Blaster 2 coil is supposed to be mounted vertically. I see a lot of them mounted on their side however.

Never a problem with mine. Been on for years and many miles.
 
I used the regular blaster 2, mounted upright...leaked after about 6 months. I shelled out the extra few bucks for the black high-vibration unit and it's been good. MSD'd use their included resistor
 
Well, I've had my coil mounted sideways in the factory bracket for years, but I do believe they'd be better upright (recommended, but no required). Most factory coils are mounted horizontally. The blaster 2 coils work just fine.ds I believe the condenser is (resistor thing) is supposed to reduce radio interference I believe, so no need if you don't have a radio or are already running solid core plug wires.
 
I have the black high vibration coil too. Suddenly, pictures will not upload here.
 
I use the, MSD 8222 epoxy filled, going on 4 years no problem.

My '69 was converted to the same orange box Mopar electronic ignition as yours when I bought it. My coil is mounted as yours is (horizontally).....................no problems.
 
I had the same blaster 2 high vibration epoxy filled coil vertically mounted as Dennis has and it quit on me after a year with only about 1000 miles. I now have my backup Firecore hp coil. I love my Firecore electronic distributor and wires but I think the blaster 2 coil ran better with my chrome box when it was working.

Anyone have strong opinions for reliability without sacrificing performance for any other coil brands out there besides msd? (Accel super stock, etc)
 
By the way, the msd blaster 2 needs to be run with a ballast resistor per the instructions and is how I always ran mine.

MSD #8222 and Accel #8140HV can be mounted horizontal according to their literature.
 
My MSD Blaster leaked when I had it in the stock horizontal spot on my 64 . Ordered a new one and put it vertical on the inner fender. Worked Great.

Thanks for the feedback. Based on the comments here, I think I will purchase the MSD 8222 high vibration. Just to confirm, I can simply take off the old Jacobs coil and put the wires to the MSD 8222? I am not going to mess around with any new resistors or anything since it has the mopar orange box electronic ignition.

The MSD 8222 is the same size single coil wire connection as a stock oil filled cannister coil. The difference is that the 8222 is epoxy filled, theoretically meaning you can mount it horizontal. Just as the stock setup with electronic ECU conversion (i.e. orange or chrome box) requires a single ignition ballast resistor, if you use the MSD 8222 you also need to still have the ballast resistor. If you already have one (usually firewall mounted) you're good to go. If the Jacob's coil didn't require it and you're switching to the MSD 8222, you'll need to add back in a ballast resistor. MSD recommends 0.8 ohm, but a 1 ohm will work just fine as well.
 
anyone else successfully running a different brand canister coil that they really like?

The instruction sheet for the 8222 states "This Blaster Coil Kit is intended to be used with an MSD Ignition. If installing on a stock, points style ignition system, a 0.8 ohm ballast resistor or resistor wiring must be installed." but you are saying even though my application has the ECU conversion it will still need the resistor?

The Jacobs specs say the Primary Resistance is .6 ohms and Secondary Resistance is 8.50k ohms. The MSD 8222 says Primary Resistance is .7 ohms and Secondary Resistance is 4.70k ohms. I have no clue what is on the jacobs now in terms of resistors and trying to figure out if I need the $10 MSD 8214 resistor or not. Would it be as simple as hooking up an ohm meter to the wires in the current setup and seeing if it is putting out .8 ohm or not?
 
Yes, if you're not using an MSD box use their resistor... It ensures proper voltage to the coil
 
If you don’t run the resistor with the chrome or orange box electronic ECU you’ll fry the coil in short order. You may not notice anything amiss at first but it will surely leave you broke down somewhere.

I have what looks like a resistor on my firewall (see attached photos). Will this resistor work with the MSD blaster coil (seemed to work with the Jacobs coil) or should I replace this with the specific MSD one?
