Will a Holley Ultra XP 950 be too much carb? I'm putting together a fresh 440, built to make about 500-550 hp, maybe more depending on how good the port job is. Originally wanted to go with FiTech but the budget dictates I save some money here.

I'm thinking the 950 would be plenty, even if I approach the 600 hp range.

Would a stock style fuel pump still be adequate?

I've got an 870 on my 512 and its wicked. I would think that 950 would work on the 440. You will want one of those wider bigger performance pumps if you stay mechanical. I think they are 110 gph but I'd have to look. 3/8 line as well.

950 will do it but are expensive. A plain jane 750 3310 will do just fine unless you are using a big cam ( over 280 degrees duration). Why spend money on cfm the engine won't use. Don't get caught up in the numbers game (cfm). 440 magnums used 750 AVS carbs.

There are 950s, and then there are 950s. One of the holleys was NAMED a 950 but was actually 750 size venturi and base plate. Make sure what size 950 you're looking at.

Street only, street/strip? Lots of 440s in low 11s, high tens with old style 850 dp. Budget option, swap meet 850, rebuild and tune it yourself, maybe $200, new 950 $700.

overlooked where you said 500=550HP. 950 will do the trick. I have a holley 950 three bbl if your interestd

Do you already have the carb? If so then yes it will work okay. If you are shopping for a carb then I wouldn't recommend a Ultra XP 950 for a mild performance engine. It is a really nice carb but you could save a lot of money by using something a little less "ultra XPish". An Edelbrock 800 carb is fairly inexpensive and would work just fine at 500 hp.

If you have not purchased a carb yet,Contact Dom and he can advise you or build a carb for your specs.Tell him I sent you,you won't regret it.There are NOT many guys I would send someone to!! I would NEVER want egg on my face!!

All good advice. New custom carbs are expensive and rarely needed. There is a holley 850 cfm sq bore vac secondary carb for auction on ebay now for $125 & ship. Check it out.

The Ultra XP 950 is a $900 carb. Why not use the Holley Sniper EFI for $1,000?

I agree that yes it will work good but they are not cheap. Myself I run the basic standard Holley 850 DP on my 440/493 in my 63. I make around 600 flywheel hp and have run 10.70's using that basic 850 DP. They are a lot cheaper then the HP 950's are. Ron

I’ve got a Holley 950 if you’re interested.

Unless a guy knows how to tune a carb,a basic out of the box carb 90% of the time needs work to run well on your engine/cam combo.I've heard it 100;s of time where a guy said it was perfect OOB.Well unless you test that carb and make some changes, how can a person tell it's perfect out of the box??
Carb and fuel management is what makes a car crisp & happy or a boggle of poor performance!
