Dear Lord. Two fellas out having a good time and next thing you know...
Apparently this happened in Gresham, OR (outside Portland). Looked to be a very pretty Charger, too.
Sobering stuff. Prayers for the families.
Sad to hear for the people that got killed and the car. RIP.
If it would have been a modern car they probably would have survived that impact, most likely with severe injuries but better then dead i guess.
Very sad. Since there are three schools in the immediate area (noticing at least one was a high school), it would be horrible if it was two students (maybe one who just got the car). I know they mentioned two adult males so who's to know until identified.
A crash like this reminds me that I've always boasted about being safe inside some heavy Detroit (people wouldn't get the Hamtramck reference) metal and that may be true to a certain degree but our OEM seat belts (and lack of other restraints/impact devices) just doesn't cut it. Stay safe out there.
The problem is although the sheetmetal is much thicker than modern cars there are no crumple zones. Even the bumper bars, although strong, are rigidly mounted. The shock from the crash goes straight through to the occupants instead of being absorbed by the car. I've been rear ended in a 1971 car at 10mph and I really felt it through my whole body, the new car behind was a mess but my car had no damage. Prayers to all their families.
The side impact problem with our cars, is not crumple zone related, they crumple just fine. The problem is that you are in the huge crumple zone known as the whole side of the car,aka the passenger compartment! You have stamped sheet metal rockers with no frame rail behind them, aka uni body construction. The B pillar is not attached to the roof either. Even the post b body pillar is just a tack welded piece of sheet metal that offers no real structual strength. In this case it looks like the front bumper of the van probably hit the Charger above the rocker panel, leaving nothing more than a latched sheet metal door, and sheet metal rear quarter to protect the occupants. Reguardless of how they were driving, the uni body failed to protect them. I am considering putting a cage in my 73 daily driver . My friend Rick is lucky to be alive, after his 73 Road Runner was T boned like that. If he would have had a passenger with him, they would have been closed casket dead for sure. You could stand on the ground in the middle of the car where the passengers seat used to be! If you go on Dodge Charger.com, and look up a thread by member elanmar,or elanmars, you can see what was left of his 69 Charger, after a passengers side T bone impact, and if they had hit the drivers side door he would be dead! I remember posting a thread on Moparts about the total lack of side impact protection in our cars. Most of the replies from people, thought I was crazy for suggesting that these cars need a roll cage and beefed up rockers, but i'm sure these two guys would agree with me if they could! I know that I will feel much safer when my stock car hits the street, with its full Nascar chassis and roll cage!
Think twice before you go pulling out in front of someone, take extra time, wether the person in the car behind you likes it or not!
Rip. Looks like maybe a foot further ahead or a foot further back and they would be surviving.
Nice looking car
Direct side hit, surprising how much of the cars front and rear look salveagable.
Be safe out there people, when driving our Mopars! They are by far the coolest looking cars, and offer a driving experience that nothing else can, but they were built during the infantcy of motor vehicle safety and perform as such in a crash situation. If you ever have seen the 100 mph crash pictures of the 69 Charger, than you know what I am taking about.
