Ok, so my '66 Poly 318 has a nice set of flowmasters on it. Sound great from the outside, but the dreaded flowmaster "drone" is wearing a bit thin. Soooo, I'm contemplating changing them for something else. Here's where you guys come in....what would be a good replacement that still sounds good from the outside but quieter on the inside? I already had an H pipe installed a couple of years ago with little difference. I'm thinking magnaflow or something similar. Any suggestions? Thanks guys!

Welded Ultra Flo mufflers......Straight through design with stainless steel packing, low restriction with a nice tone.

You might want to try adding super bee tips on the end of the tailpipes, it helped quite a bit on my charger with Magnaflow 3 chamber mufflers. You want them to exit beyond the bumper. I made my own rubber mounts for the hangers. I would not recommend the magna flows alone, at least on a 383.

I very recently put a 3" exhaust with SpinTech 3000 series mufflers on mine (440 with a pretty aggressive cam) and I really love the sound. Much deeper tone than the Flowmaster 40 series I had on there before and the SpinTech ones are very well made out of heavy gauge steel.

I haven't had them long so it may be too soon to identify any drone, but I don't notice anything yet. I'll try to get a video posted in the next couple days.

Hows your insulation under the carpet/trunk? IMO that no one has really made a 40series type muffler that doesnt drone inside....
Father inlaw has magnaflows and it sounds like a new Mustang/Camaro, another friend has Borlas and his sounds the same. Wife's car has Thrush Turbos they are ok, pretty docile and unassumming...
I have already bought my exhaust and went with the Spintechs, but I like that kind of tinny sound...

If I were looking for mufflers, I would seriously look at Jones Exhaust products at Summit. I HAVE NOT tried them, but I see stainless straight thru for less than most plain steel in many sizes and lengths. I believe longer is quieter, but not much more restrictive if straight thru.
The 3" flowmaster on my dually currently lists for $160, Jones Maxflow equivalent in stainless is something like $55.

I added a set of Thrush glasspacks as resonators on my system. Sounds perfect...to me.

Well Moose I had a similar experience but before I went radical and ripped my exhaust off I thought I'd try a little experiment with resonators outback. Having a straight run of dual tail pipes running on either side of the fuel tank gave opportunity to install them. My exhaust is 2 1/2 inch but resonators come in several sizes. I bought a set of MBRP R1012's which are small in diameter and 21 inches long. They maintain "flow-through" properties for no restriction and took all the drone and resonance out of the system. Now you hear the "growl" when behind the vehicle but nothing when in the vehicle at all speeds. And they are completely manufactured from T304 stainless. At $99 apiece, they're not cheap but they sure did the job and were a snap to install using band clamps and as a bonus, my Mopar tips mated right to them. They're so inconspicuous because of their size, you have to get down on the ground to know they're there. Just an option if you have room put back.

I just made the switch from Flowmasters to Borla's for that very reason. The difference is huge! Way better with the Borla's.

And here are the flowmasters:

I've had 2 different cars with flowmasters, loved the sound but hated the drone. My current car has magnaflow mufflers and I think they are perfect. Nice sound and no drone.

I'm biased, dynomax ultra-flo welded for me !
I liked the sound of my Flowmasters. They made the engine sound meaner than it was. It never had the "drone" noise that I hear about though. If I just tooled around the town, I would have kept them. What prompted me to switch was how they reverberated at freeway speeds. They sounded great for a few minutes but after that I just wanted relief! The sound beat me up on long drives and I have been trying to make the car a better driver for all situations.

I use thrush welded 2 chamber , 2 1/2 in and out , open ended before the axle , no drone , sounds healthy

I don't understand this Flowmaster " drone " so many talk about. We drove our 440 engine Dodge 691 miles a couple weeks ago. Super 44's with 2 -1/2" exhaust pipes , 2 - 1/4" tailpipes, stock Magnum ex. manifolds. X pipe. Boom mat and heat duct insulation under the carpet. 2250-2500 RPM. No harsh sound at all , loved it--no reason to ever change it............MO

That's what I used on my stock 318 Satellite. If you like the sound of " glass paks" these are great. Fairly quiet and mellow till you get on the loud pedal , and then you get that familiar glasspak sound, but not harsh. . I have had compliments on it.....MO

Thanks for the comparison. It is a matter of individual preference, but IMO , I like the Flowmasters..................MO

I've gotta say, totally different sound to me ! I removed glass packs and installed ultra-flo welded mufflers and they sound nothing alike ! .... but every car is different I guess ..

We have them on the 55 too, turn downs in front of the axle , I love the sound...but there is a certain rpm i think around 1100-1300 rpm that the whole cabin will resonate enough to knock any fillings out.
I love it especially pulling into a local cruise night and I dont spend a lot of time in that range anyway. If you had to listen to it for an extended ammount of time it would certainly drive you crazy or possibly deaf. You cant even talk when that's happening.

What is the part # on your Borlas? Sounds sweet!

It would be helpful if the op would give us more info on his current system. Tailpipes, dump under car in front of axle, out in front of rear tire, mufflers right off headers or under back seat, headers or exhaust manifolds, what rpm is the drone, etc.
I think more info will get more help.
