Next week, I need to rent a trailer to tow my 72 SSP from PA to OK. Im not a fan of U-haul's price at $500 for 5 days and no commitment to stocking my reservation at a store anywhere close to where I need it (last time I had to drive 30 miles out of the way just to pick it up). Has anyone used Sunbelt or United for renting an equipment trailer for their car? They look cheaper per day and the trailers look much easier to tow (electric brakes). Also FYI I cant buy a trailer.

I have rented the U-haul Auto-Transport a dozen times in the past year. I like that trailer. Yes, U-haul can be a bitch to deal with. Mostly I have had good experiences. Sunbelt, never open on weekends here so always off the list. Not any help for you, but good luck.

Here in Washington, U-haul has held a trailer for me, when I gave them my card, and if I canceled no charge.

Uhaul is the only one that will let you use your own vehicle to tow it. Budget and Penske requires useing their truck only.

I've used the Uhaul in the past. 500 mile trip, reserved one at the destination. Returned it near home. Don't remember the cost but it was worth it.

I've also used a transport company for a purchase in Texas, shipped to my door in Maryland. Cheaper than I could have spent driving there and back myself.

Can you rent one from a friend or someone local to you? I am assuming a two way trip/

I've used Uhaul many times. Bought my own trailer now but never an issue. If I recall they only charged me like $50-60 for the day. Dropping somewhere else was like $10 more. I thought it was a pretty good deal. Only reason I bought my own is so I can haul a body on casters.

call a few local flatbed guys sometimes there looking for work on their days off. had a guy snatch up my GTX in Rhode Island 400 mile round trip charged me $400

I think I'm done with U-Haul. Last month I wanted to rent one and the local rental place said they can no longer make reservations on-site and have to go thru U-Haul's reservation hotline. I did all that and it went smoothly but the problem I had is I made a reservation with them a few weeks out for a trailer and their new procedure is that they will locate one and tell you where to pick it up THE NIGHT BEFORE. It was too unsettling for me to wait until the last minute to KNOW when and where to get it. Ended up borrowing a coworker's 21ft Kaufman trailer. Sweet trailer, especially for the money, but I think I like my buddy's Big Tex better.

How about a car dolly?

I got a good deal on mine (under $500) but expect closer to 1K.

Besides being easier to store, FL does not require a registration on them.

One of the best investments I've ever made.

Added a removable harbor freight marine winch, and now I basically own a tow truck.

Biggest downside is not being able to back up requires you to think your moves out ahead.

@YellowDodge67 - If that U-Haul store won't make your reservation for you, they are wrong. My son is an assistant manager at a LARGE U-Haul store. You make your reservation online OR at the store, hold it on your card, and it'll be there when you need it.

That's how it went the past few times I had dealt with them. They were pretty good too because they're an equipment rental place not some gas station, which is why I was surprised at this new policy. As big as U-Haul is I'm sure they would have found a trailer for me but I just didn't like waiting until the last minute on something so critical. Ended up cancelling my reservation a few days later.

Who did you use for shipping? I take it that you were happy with the results (timeliness, care, etc.)? Thanks.
