anyone every seen a 392 hemi gen 1 in a 65 B body. I’ve got a 65 Coronet and a 392 Hemi... wondering if it’s possible to do without too much cutting and modifying

I can't remember if the 5.7 is a 392 but here is one on youtube. No idea how much work it takes. See the at 2:52 and the dash is cool too at 1:25. I'm thinking of putting in a modern Hemi in my 65 someday too. Good luck with it.

A real 392 will work very nicely in a 65. I would do this instead of wasting time with anew Gen III so called hemi which doesn't have the cool factor like a real hemi does.

I have seen a 6/71 blown gen 1 392 in a red 65 in socal. It was very well done, show quality car. I dont recall if it used an elephant ear system or not , and i have no idea how much work was done to get it in there.
Up front, it is ABSOLUTELY your car to do what you please... but my personal opinion (which isn't worth much) is that a stroker b or rb makes more sense, much lighter witn aluminum heads, more power potential.
I absolutely love early hemis ,and wish i had one, but i would look to put it in something older, that a hemi swap would be a massive improvement in. Anglia Austin,Willys, old mopar business coupe, studebaker of any sort would be my choice.
Please take this with a grain of salt, and do what you want . Just know it can be done. If you do it ,take great notes and lots of pictures!

I thought about doing this in my '64 Belvedere several years ago. Turned out the engine I was told was a 392 was a 354, so I didn't do it. This site has good info and resources on adapting a 392 to a non 392 car.

I say go for it if you want. It would be a cool, unique set-up.

The old hemis are very heavy and a lot wider. I think it would be alot easier to build a gen ll. Just my thought. good luck

Not sure what would be needed for the swap, but if you have both just sitting around you might as well do it.

Found this and it looks like it fits better than a Gen II.

Its your car so do what you want.... however here's a few things to consider. First, building an early hemi is EXTREMELY expensive. Just a stock rebuild will easily cost double what a performance rebuild in a B or RB will cost. Second, in order to match the horsepower of an RB you'll need a fair amount of performance goodies which also aren't cheap. The logistics of installing any of the early Chrysler hemis isn't that tough but it is wide and heavy. A 392 will weigh over 700 lbs. without accessories so keep that in mind.

So, bottom line.. if your pocket book is deep enough and you want the cool factor then go for it. If you don't have enough cash for a performance build then the cool will be there but it will be a dog performance wise.

I've built and installed these in streetrods and my last one... with a stock rebuild was a little over $8000 and could easily be out run by just about any small block chebby. Ran 3 deuces with the outboard carbs blocked off. A real tri-power setup is expensive. If I had added another 3-4 grand in performance parts it would have been different but my pockets weren't that deep and I was just going for the cool factor. Below is a pic of my Deuce. Took 3 years to build, drove it for 4 years and sold it to a friend for a 5 figure check and the Corvette in my avatar.

Good luck either way.

I love the old 392 and they are beautiful eye candy in the old street rods but like centerline said they are costly to build up ,I got a bunch of them and I want to build one up for my model A sedan delivery but it is a money pitt have been looking for a eight barrel manifold

eye candy for sure

do it!

I think it was Hot Rod magazine ran an article about beefing up the front end of a ‘65 before putting a Hemi in. They were installing a 528 cid Ray Barton Hemi in a ‘65 project car.

quite easy especially if you get the Wil-Cap adapter to the 727 torqeflite, I dont see any cutting issues , I have seen this done 3-4 times, paint the engine orange half the people wont notice its a 392- even with the dist in back. in my opinion , the early hemi is a better choice than the late late hemis (gen3?) If I had it I'd do it and now you have given me idea's. now I'm excited- sure can't afford another426 hemi.

if the 727 is from an A block, even easier to adapt.

I just took this in on a trade. I really need to sell it, but I think I’ll hang on to it for awhile just to admire what’s under the hood.

I put a 426 hemi in my '62 Dart wagon that was a slant 6 car,I didnt' do anything with the torsion bars,it was OK
has anyone put coil over suspension on a B body using the uppershock mount area and did it need re-enforcement.

Do you have any pictures of this swap? I would love to see them. And the fact you kept the original suspension is remarkable.
