Looking for ideas after being very disappointed in the typical offerings. Now that I'll be heating my home and garage on 100% wood I'm looking to streamline the process and the norm isn't going to cut it. I've been renting one every year and splitting everything over a weekend but can't help but think how much easier it should be, my complaints...

#1 my outdoor burner will except 34" logs, most splitters are limited to 24"-26".

#2 the wedges are usually only 6" wide meaning on stringy wood I'm constantly splitting both sides of every cut!

#3 very slow cycle time.

I'm thinking about building a splitter that splits in the center of the log and splits 4-6 pieces at a time.. possibly a hyd loader as well?

Looking for ideas, this project will likely be well down the road just curious to see what's out there.

747Mopar . . . I think you can use that Press that you have in the shop to get the job done ! ! ! ! LOL

Yes but it's electric and spoken for, I'm more focused on the splitter side of it right now. The pics above show what I'm thinking, combine the horizontal self loading splitter with the multi cut thingamajiger and you'll get where I'm going. Being elevated will give me the option of putting a conveyor under it so it's loading the truck too:thumbsup:.

Would this work? Looks like you could fit a 48"er in there, pretty badass. Good Luck

I saw that and really liked it but I'm thinking it would require a massive frame and plenty of oomph to do that to a log.

Being an ol hvac tin knocker, i gotta ask, why heat with wood only ?
Because I can get all the wood I want and virtually heat both the house and garage for free. Rather than mess around hauling it I pay $240 for a knuckle boom load stacked neatly in my field then work at it until it's done. $240 vs $1,500, I was paying $1,500 a year just to heat the house alone and will now heat the garage and house. No brainer

I just have a cheap small one, although it does have a Honda motor on it. What I really like about it though is that it splits both ways. The wedge in the middle goes each way against an end plate. So you split a piece, then lay another where the ram just was and reverse to split another. If I was building one I would seriously think about that design.

This is my weapon of choice. We heat only with a central boiler also.

We also have a conventional with a 16hp knock off Honda. The cycle rate is slow. I have really been thinking of rebuilding it with the 2 way ram like hunk2elk has. The skid loaded splitter works great to split large (sometimes we get 3 to 4ft diameter logs) into manageable sizes. We get most of our wood from tree removal services. With all the EPA mandates on burning, they have a hard time getting rid of the wood. I bring my 12000lb dump trailer in and they full it with limbed, brushed hardwood for a case of pop.

But I thought that's what your lookin for, and that big *** pile in the background waitin to be cut & split.

That's worse than Belushi as the Samauri!

There's always this?

Or this for da big jobs!

Blowing **** up - the most fun you can have with your pants on.

I'd say that first guy in post #17 didn't run quite far enough.
