11-12 mpg with a 440

I was getting double digits with my 526" when I was using a Hughes 4650-BL3 hydraulic flat tappet with Stage 6 heads and 4.30 gears. It would average 13.2 - 13.6 mpg at 72 mph. It freaked me out the first time I took a long trip with it after the cam change. It was definitely an odd deal because before that the best I think I had ever got from any 440 was 10-11 mpg. 25" of vacuum while cruising at that speed as well. I don't see anywhere near that with the solid roller I run now.

I start to sweat whenever I see posted signs that say "Next service 50 miles"

Lol, Ya' need one of these with them 440's...…..

A friend had a 70 Charger RT w 440 auto w 4.10 gears with cam and carb change. He said it got 20 mpg and I said bs. He challenged me with a trip. He in his car and me in my 72 318 Charger. At our destination we filled the tanks. We both got the same mileage. 20 mpg.

I am pleased when I rarely kiss 17-18 on a trip with the TKO. More about range than mpg for me.

Not going to check mine, just buy fuel when I need it :D

I'd LOVE to know what cam grind is getting double digit MPG from a 575-ish HP 440.
I had a 292/509 in my 440/493 and got 12.8 mpg.......65 mph with a 3.91 and a Gear Vendors. (3.10 final drive in OD) That same combo got 10.6 mpg with a 3.23 and no overdrive.

The OP didn't say anything about an OD or gears did he?

Wow that old school 509 straight grind?

I had to buy 2 gallons from Igor to make it to 93 and on to Vegas. 200 mile range just isn't enough sometimes.

It was the old style grind, not the revised one for better vacuum. It was installed with the timing marks aligned which actually resulted in a 1.5 degree retard setting. MP ignition set to 16 initial, 33 total. Edelbrock heads, RPM intake, Demon 850 VS, 2" TTI headers, 2 1/2" pipes.

Low end user here, so be nice. I plan to get a vacuum advance distributor going for next year. Just can't go 65 on those roads. 3:54 Dana TKO 5 fluid pissing Keisler.

Love this picture, the fact that you are driving on gravel!
That was after following him about 1/2 mile through the trailer park. Lucky to get out of there. It was behind this place. Fuel is for the Quads. Sorry to hijack thread. If I didn't take it on the road, I wouldn't care about the mileage.

If I don't beat it up,I can squeeze almost 12 MPG.That happened once. It's a 9:1 till the boost comes in.At cruise 2800 RPM there is almost 20 inches of vacume under the 2 toilets.

Haha no worries man! At least you’re driving the car! Just got back from the parts store, was down-pouring but now it’s sprinkling. Only car I drive in the summer cause we have two seasons, long winter and short summer
