Hi all, hope your all doing ok.

Got my steering column out tonight and had a look at the coupler. The old shoe string broke contributing to my excessive play.

Any ways the new shoe have some play on the old pin espescially on one side. I got a new pin in the kit but it’s seems very hard to press out. .

How difficult is the pin to press out does anyone know. I don’t have a hydraulic press here at home.

Great question. I know I tried everything in my toolbox short of drilling the pin out or using a massive press.

No they're usually not easy, but you shouldn't need a press. When I rebuilt mine it was out of the car too so I put a socket under one side to support the shaft and catch the pin, then tapped it down with a hammer... when it was flush with the shaft I finished driving it through with a pin punch.

I use a vise with a socket instead of tapping it down with a hammer, then finish driving it through with a pin punch. I also use a vise to install the new pin.

I couldn't get mine out - was easier for me to remove the column and slide it out of the box.

That works good too, if you have a way to hold the column up to the vise...that's how I do all my u-joints too

I have a length of 4"X4" lumber that I lay across my workbench to support the other end of the column. I do the same thing when changing U joints too.

I see, well i tried pressing it out with a socket in my big old record vise and that sucker don’t want to budge at all.

I might try a few taps with the hammer as suggested but don’t want to mushroom it.

But it’s looking I’ll have to bring it to then hydraulic press and try that

Got it pressed out yesterday and rebuilt last night. Just need to reconnect and tidy the wiring and I’m good to go.
